This Kultur Spiegel issue from Germany combines Celibidache's two finest live Bruckner symphony recordings in a bargain slipcase. They are available separately on EMI, usually much more expensively, so snap this up. I reprint my reviews of the EMI isues below:

Fourth Symphony:

I take my cue from the perceptive review by the late Colin Fortune, who observes that while this live performance might not be the one you'd suggest to introduce a Bruckner novice to the Fourth, nor is it necessarily the one to live with, its unique appeal and highly personal vision make it compulsory listening for any Bruckner aficionado open-minded enough to welcome an interpretation which radiates conviction and sincerity.

Celibidache's legendary slow tempi are in fact not so much in evidence until the last movement which is a tour de force. Otherwise, the listener is simply aware of a massive yet melodic and free-flowing pulsation to the music which never drags. It is simply crass to caricature Celi's tempi as "slow"; the word is inadequate to describe his uncanny ability to find the "still point" in this music and embrace the infinite. Slowness is usually associated with heaviness but not here: there is a kind of balletic grace to the music's unfolding like watching planets or building blocks swing into position. The Scherzo is - well, if not exactly perky, certainly fluid, lithe and nimble without sacrificing grandeur. But of course it is the Finale which separates the wimps from the True Believers and while I can surrender disbelief sufficiently to be caught up in its spell, I can quite understand those for whom it is all too much at 27 minutes.

I bought Celibidache's recording of these two Bruckner symphonies with the Munich Phil after a fascinating dinner conversation with a retired cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra who had played under him. Much has been written about the interpretations so no further elaboration is needed here. What disappoints me, however, is the packaging. The two CDs come in a four-leaved card case - 5 and a half inches by 7 and three-eighths inches, too wide and too tall to fit on my CD shelves. A biography and a timeline of the conductor - in German only - are the only notes to accompany the discs. One supposes that the bargain price will entail some compromise, but not a silly-sized CD case which doesn't allow the excellent recordings to sit with others in your collection. The CD cover image for this item is misleading, and isn't an accurate representation of the correct dimensions, as the bottom has been cropped. What a shame.
