Synopsis
The great historian of science Ferdinand Rosenberger lived from 1845 to 1899. Towards the end of his life he published his massive "Die Geschichte de Physik" (History of Physics) on which he had been working for decades. The work became a classic and, although it has never been translated into English, it is often quoted by historians of science and features on many course reading lists in Europe and the United States. Rosenberger's "History" is divided into three chronological parts. The first is called "Geschichte der Physik im Alterhum und im Mittelalter" - history of physics in antiquity and the medieval period. The middle part, "Geschichte der Physik in der neuren Zeit", covers so-called "modern times", c.1600-1780. The final section, "Geschichte der Physik in den letzen hundert Jahren" runs for the century from 1780 to the time of writing. Each section contains a chronology of events in the development of physics, chemistry and mathematics set in the context of general world history. Throughout, Rosenberger gives biographies of scientific figures both major and minor along with explanations of their theories and discoveries.
