Product Description

Product Description

Designed as a comprehensively cross-referenced companion to the original Dictionary, this second volume includes over 1,000 new or extended entries. These cover many previously unrecorded patterns, recent attributions, newly discovered design sources and a significant number of additional manufacturers and retailers. Some of the more interesting wares after the original deadline of 1880 have also been included. The social history behind the potters' choice of subject is of considerable interest and, wherever possible, entries include details of the people or events which inspired unidentified patterns or their titles. One new feature is an Appendix illustrating unidentified patterns, important marked examples of which may yet be unearthed by a diligent collector. Interest in these wares has increased dramatically in recent years and the enthusiasm shown for blue and white continues to grow. Volume two of The Dictionary is a sound buy for both passionate and dilettante admirers of 'Blue'. ''

5.0 out of 5 stars Volume Two of the Definitive Work, 20 Mar 2003
By
Dr. I Sayer (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880: Additional Entries v. 2 (Dictionary of Blue & White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880) (Hardcover)
At the time of writing this was rated 3 stars. Why? As a serious long term collector of Blue & White, I have to say that this & Volume 1 are unarguably the definitve texts, & they clearly supersede all the earlier (& later) error ridden lightweight competetors.

Volume 1 is the main work; this work (Vol. 2) is merely a slimmer updating. It is, as the title says, a properly researched reference dictionary (lavishly illustrated), not a chatty fireside book.

The only omissions (deliberate) are the American views, such as those made by Stubbs with the Spread Eagle Border etc., for which you'll have to turn to "Arman" or other early American publications.

In summary;- a first class extension to Volume 1, and must rate 5 stars. Essential reference for any serious collector.

3.0 out of 5 stars A useful addition to the main dictionary, 19 May 2002

This review is from: The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880: Additional Entries v. 2 (Dictionary of Blue & White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880) (Hardcover)
This volume is well laid out in alphabetical order and easy to follow. The basis of the dictionary is the name of the designs rather than the manufacturer of the pottery. New items are flagged and updated items are cross referenced to the Volume 1 edition. This does limit the book as a complete reference unless you are also in possession of Volume 1. There is an unfortunate limit on colour plates when black and white presentation does not do justice to the illustrations. The major limitation of the volume is the lack of dating information in relation to the huge variety of designs on offer.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than a reference book: An interesting read as well, 1 Nov 2006
By Kay Hepworth "Gordon" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880, volume II (additional entries and supplementary information). (Hardcover)
The most comprehensive references on transferware pottery are basically boring lists: You use them to reference a specific item, and not much else.
This book is so much more.
It's a top reference work, but is also the sort of book you can put on the coffee table - or curl up with in bed for an absorbing couple of hours reading.
Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but disappointing, 10 Jan 2011
By joseph radecki - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880: Additional Entries v. 2 (Dictionary of Blue & White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880) (Hardcover)
Very informative, but the vast majority of the photos are black and white! Not ideal. I would not have purchased the book had this been made known.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Nice Reference Book for Transferware, 24 April 2009
By J. Windham "Book and Movie Lover" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880: v. 1 (Dictionary of Blue & White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880) (Hardcover)
Books on transferware (blue and white) pottery are very hard to find. And it's even harder to find a good one, that has enough information to be useful.

This is a VERY nice reference book for transferware pottery. While not every pattern is pictured (an impossible feat considering how many different patterns there are), there are dozens and dozens of example pictures through out. Beautiful patterns - some of which I had never seen before. They also show numerous examples of the original painting or sketch or engraving next to the transferware pattern, which I found very interesting. Many makers/manufacturers marks and date stamps are covered also.

This book doesn't even attempt to assign monetary prices to the patterns, but as a reference book you can't beat it. Well worth the money!
