I'm very glad to see this is still available as it is widely regarded as the best book of its kind. If you are going to have one dictionary of symbols it should be this one. Next best is Cooper's. The greatest authority on symbolism per se is Rene Guenon, whose 'Fundamental Symbols'is a classic and an initiatory text. Symbols mediate between the spiritual and material planes. To contemplate them with understanding is to open doors that allow the spiritual to communicate directly with the soul.

This Spanish original (however very badly translated into English by a Spaniard or an anglophile bot adapting the translation to the basics of the end language) gives a very detailed overview of symbolism and its utilisation in various societies.

It is a very good source, however, the translation from Spanish to English or vice versa is different and it could be disappointing. But overall, the dictionary is very useful.
