Product Description

This is a comprehensive thought-provoking guide to the fascinating world of symbols.

Just as we dream every night without always being aware of it, so our waking life is full of symbolism that operates on an unconscious level. This dictionary draws on the collective wisdom of the great psychologists, particularly Jung, to decode the secret language of symbols. The main characteristics that recur in all symbolic material are revealed, and we are shown how to become aware of the patterns and processes at work in our minds and so explore, develop and tranform ourselves.

From the Back Cover

“Without symbols our lives would be as spiritually impoverished as sleep without dreams …”

Just as we dream every night without necessarily being aware of it, so our waking life is full of symbolism that operates on an unconscious level. Drawn from the collective wisdom of the great psychologists, particularly Jung, this comprehensive, fascinating and revealing guide decodes the language of symbols. Tom Chetwynd describes the major characteristics that recur in all symbolic material and shows how identifying them can help us to recognize the patterns and processes at work in their own minds, and so explore, develop and transform ourselves.

Tom Chetwynd studied theology at London University and wrote a number of novels and stories before turning his attention to exploring the unconscious. The 'Dictionary of Symbols' follows his highly acclaimed 'dictionary for Dreamers', with 'Dictionary of Sacred Myth' completing his study of dreams, symbols and myths.

“A really remarkable book … written with a great deal of learning and good humour.”
RICHARD HOLMES, 'The Standard'

By Francois BARDOL - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Tom Chetwynd's volume is a great reference , for traditional and less traditional symbolic meanings of archetypal images , objects , places etc. Very handy and direct , simple to read. I t will give you a good start if you are a student ,an artist, or a lay person looking for a deeper meaning behind the image.
