Product Description

Product Description

This dictionary is designed for use by photographers, professional and amateur, and teachers and students of graphic design and digital art - in short for anyone who is concerned with capturing images, and using digital technology to scan, manipulate and publish them in whatever form. It has been pitched at a level that will make it accessible to the newcomer to the field, but with sufficient technical depth and precision, where necessary, to make it useful to the advanced practitioner as well. There are over 2100 entries, with cross references and many multiple levels of word entry; there are also numerous sidebars providing additional observations and useful information. This is the most up-to-date, comprehensive and authoritative work in this rapidly developing and expanding area. With in-depth coverage of all aspects of the subject, easy accessibility and complete authority, it will become a standard work of reference for photographers and those working in related fields.

About the Author

Tom Ang has been writing on photography for nearly twenty years, and has worked as editor and picture editor on many photographic magazines. He is Senior Lecturer in photographic practice at the University of Westminster and writes regularly for MacUser magazine and Ag-Photographic journal. His books include Silver Pixels (also published by Argentum), Digital Photography, Picture Editing and The Too of Photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Companion Work, 12 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Dictionary of Photography and Digital Imaging (Paperback)
It is with a certain wickedness that I first read a book described as a Dictionary - I always look for those specialised words you almost know won't be included! This time I was foxed. Everytime I tried to catch out the text, there was the entry staring me in the face!

This is a very comprehensive dictionary of photography with an emphasis (rather than obsession) with digital cameras and media. It is, in fact, a very well balanced book for Photography today. There are one or two dubious (or at least ambiguous) entries but for a first edition we can excuse those. If it is light in any areas it is in the area of software. This is no big problem and, by experience, I would suggest the complementary title 'THe Photoshop User's A to Z to fill in the 'holes' left here.

This book should be on the bookshelf of every contemporary photographer whether they class themselves as amateur, enthusiast or professional. It can be enjoyed as a good read as well as reference!

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money, 15 Jun 2003

Simply put, how can you have a "Dictionary of Photography"
without any photographic examples? I am an Amateur / Semi-Professional who has been shooting photos for nearly 25 years.
I have photographed weddings, corporate events and stock photos. As well as art photos for my own personal enjoyment. Maybe its my level of knowledge and expertise, but I don't see how this book would be of much use to anyone. Dedicated Amateurs and Professionals such as my self would know what the author was trying to say. However, a beginner or even an intermediate photographer might not understand a text only definition. Imagine Gray's Anatomy as only text and no diagrams. Granted one cannot have a picture next to every entry, that just wouldn't be practical. But the publishing company should include several hundred photographic examples for its next edition. If anyone reading this review is considering this book, take it from someone who knows, save your money. Purchase "The Photographer's Handbook" by John Hedgecoe instead.
