Book Description

13 May 2010 Oxford Paperback Reference
Covering all the major Hindu practices, festivals, beliefs, gods, sacred sites, languages, and religious texts, this is the most comprehensive Hinduism dictionary of its kind. It contains 2,800 entries on everything from Tantra to temples, from bhakti to Divali, as well as biographical entries for key thinkers, teachers, and scholars. All entries are clear, concise, up to date, and fully cross-referenced.

With its coverage spanning 3,500 years of Hinduism - from the religion's conception to Hinduism in the 21st century - this brand new A-Z also acknowledges the historical interplay between Hindu traditions and others, for example, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, and Islamic. Detailed appendices include maps, pronunciation guide, a chronology, principal sources and further reading, and useful websites. This dictionary is an invaluable first port of call for students and teachers of Hinduism, theology, Asian studies, or philosophy, as well as the related disciplines of history, sociology, and anthropology. It is also an ideal source of reference for all practicing Hindus and for anyone with an interest in Indian religions and culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't read the Vedas without this. 8 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A very good book, covers most of the basics. It's hard really to cover everything because Hinduism is such a large field. I bought it to because I kept forgetting the meaning of major Gods, Maruts / Rudra / Indra / Svitar / Varuna / Mitra etc etc It covers these adequately.

The other thing I found impressive was that if you look up the Mahabharata, it lists all the books within it and provides a synopsis of what each book covers, this allowed me to investigate Bhisma's teachings in greater detail.

There is also a pronunciation guide at the back, which helps.

The book is far from perfect, but given the complexity of the subject it tries to cover, it's more than adequate and I highly recommend it.

This book is indispensable for anyone attempting to study Hinduism. My only regret is that I wish the book was at least twice the size but that's not a serious criticism. I think it is fortunate that such an excellent resource is available.
