Product Description

Fully revised and updated for the sixth edition, this market-leading dictionary is the perfect guide for anyone studying biology, either at school or university. With nearly 5,500 clear and concise entries, over 400 of them new to this edition, it provides comprehensive coverage of biology, biophysics, and biochemistry. Features include biographical entries on key scientists, chronologies charting developments in major fields including cell biology, genetics, microscopy, and vitamins, and double-page feature articles on important topics such as bioinformatics, genetically modified organisms, microarray technology, and RNA interference. Appendices include classifications of the animal and plant kingdoms, the geological time scale, major mass extinctions of species, model organisms and their genomes, and Nobel prizewinners - the last two new to this edition.

I'm currently doing my As Level and on average this dictionary has less than half of the words that i have looked up in it, the Henderson's one is much better (even though its older)Henderson's Dictionary of Biological Terms. Although clear and easy to understand, i'm always dissapointed when i cant look up a word in my edexcel book, and it doesn't even have definations of its own words used in deffinaitions. I understand biology is an extremly broad subject, but Aslevel biology isn't that broad with what it covers, and this dictionary is lacking. Its alright, but i wouldn't reccommend it

Like other reviewers I find this dictionary constantly frustrating. It is not comprehensive, and more often than not it doesn't have the term I am looking for, meaning I have to resort to the internet or textbooks. For example, it has the definition for 'jaw' but lacks 'qualia' and 'geosmins'. Not recommended for anyone above A level.

Love it! 19 Mar 2012
Very useful! Would recommend it to anyone doing a-levels, I've got one for each subject now and it's proving to help lots with all the keywords.
