5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensible grammar reference, 9 Jun 2003
By

This review is from: A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar (Paperback)
I love this book!

The main section is an alphabetical listing of various
grammatical features such as particles, auxillary verbs
and adjectives, useful constructions, key words and phrases,
and so on. Each entry comes with detailed notes and examples
on how to use the grammar point, how not to use it, how it
compares with other features with similar meanings, etc. All
the example sentences are written in both Japanese and romaji.

And don't be misled by the word 'Basic' in the title. There
is a plenty in this book to make it interesting to an intermediate
student. But when you find you need something more, there is
an 'Intermediate' companion volume by the same authors.

Aside from main dictionary section the book contains a useful
explanation of many grammatical terms that may not be familiar
to some students, and a long section on the general features of
Japanese grammar, such as word order.

There are also a number of quite
useful appendices - perhaps the most useful shows the rules
behind the sound mutations of numerals + counters, which
are pretty daunting for the beginner. An English index allows you
to find the Japanese equivalent of an English construction.

I thoroughly recommend this book to all serious students of
Japanese.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic reference, 15 Feb 2010
By
S. F. CARTER (Leicestershire, UK) - See all my reviews

This review is from: A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar (Paperback)
I've owned this reference for many years, and it has gone unloved on my shelf being picked out only occasionally for reference.

However, I now find myself at a turning point - my vocabulary and Kanji reading are good enough that I can glean huge amounts of information from the book. In fact, just browsing Appendix 4 (which contains a whole slew of useful sentence patterns) makes the book worth the money. It's then possible to go into the body of the text and read _very_ informative descriptions of each grammar point.

Having struggled for a long time with only 'survival' Japanese, I'm now at the point where this book is absolutely indispensable. So, feel free to buy it as a beginner, but don't worry too much if it's intimidating. Its time will come when you will really see its worth. As a reference for those who have already studied Japanese for a few taught years, I think it's probably one of the most comprehensive and accessible guides you'll find.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 23 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar (Paperback)
This dictionary details the usage of the basic Japanese grammer points in alphebetical order. The meanings and usage of each entry are well defined and all examples are given in Kanji/Kana, Romaji and English. Related expression are referenced and the differences explained. The text is well laid out which makes it clear and easy to follow. The intermediate dictionary is also available and includes an index of the basic to link the books.

It is an excellent learning guide and reference for basic and intermediate level.
