I've owned this reference for many years, and it has gone unloved on my shelf being picked out only occasionally for reference.
However, I now find myself at a turning point - my vocabulary and Kanji reading are good enough that I can glean huge amounts of information from the book. In fact, just browsing Appendix 4 (which contains a whole slew of useful sentence patterns) makes the book worth the money. It's then possible to go into the body of the text and read _very_ informative descriptions of each grammar point. Having struggled for a long time with only 'survival' Japanese, I'm now at the point where this book is absolutely indispensable. So, feel free to buy it as a beginner, but don't worry too much if it's intimidating. Its time will come when you will really see its worth. As a reference for those who have already studied Japanese for a few taught years, I think it's probably one of the most comprehensive and accessible guides you'll find.
