Rock's longest, strangest trip, the Grateful Dead were the psychedelic era's most beloved musical ambassadors as well as its most enduring survivors, spreading their message of peace, love, and mind-expansion across the globe throughout the better part of three decades. The object of adoration for popular music's most fervent and celebrated fan following -- the Deadheads, their ... Read more in Amazon's Grateful Dead Store

Format: Audio CD
I spent some time with the Dick's Picks recordings in Holland; I had enormous time on my hands to do so, and spent some effort in an attempt to decompose some of the solos on Volume three. For the reasons I will delineate below, this completely failed for volume five.

Volume five appears to be one single show spanning three CDs, some three hours of music. The first CD consists of a mixture of the kinds of ballads that led to such exemplary improvisations that the band enjoyed so much in the late 1970s and early 1980s; this was basically an outgrowth of the long association with bluegrass and days in the company of marvellous friends, such as those companions in Old and In the Way; and for an hour or so you can kind of track Jerry down to that open ended world.

At the second CD, this ends completly. Naturally, this is the well known interface between the first and the second set, but what happens here is a complete and absolute schism. The band is not the same, indeed, seem to have vanished and been replaced with denizens of some place where the wild things are.

They start, innocently with Uncle John's band, but Jerry is now playing astonishingly fast, and in a way that moves the piece and those following to something owing it's ancestry to a furious flamenco, and all I could think of was Manitas De Plata - At this point I stopped even thinking about trying to keep up - there is a demon wind behind the man, and it's blowing gale force. Then comes a half recognisable Estimated Prophet, but full of the same fire and passion and colour, and then into uncharted and undocumented territory - an excursion into a revelry with no name, dissolving in exhaustion at last into He's Gone.

Then it goes mad again, and this time, far further, leaving us all behind.

Catch dat early Mydland Fire! 24 Sep 2014
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This show is great. Brent Mydland really breathed new energy into these guys. The first set is great, kicking of w. Cold Rain & Snow. Other good stuff on the first set is Dire Wolf, Big River, Me & My Uncle, New New Minglewood and Brown Eyed Women-all kick-a$$ 1st set fire! I never cared too much for the slowed down non-blugrassy version of Freind of The Devil, but things pick up with the last three tunes on Disc one "Looks Like Rain"(nice version on here a killer"Alabama Getaway" &"Promised Land" sounds tight when you breath in the "Mydland Fire Breath Of Life" into it!
The 2nd disc is even more killer with an incredible The Other One, Uncle John's Band, and one of the best Estimated Prophet renditions i have heard. This set has a cool Rhythmn Devils/Space (can't say i have heard a Rhythmn Devils/Space that i didn't like)The Space madness continues into Disc 3 and on to an awesome Brokedown Palace & the Shakedown Street on here is the stuff of legend!
