Product Description

Product Description

David Dickinson is the hottest new antiques celebrity in Britain today. With twenty five years as a professional dealer, he has bought an invigorating enthusiasm and authority to TV antiques shows which has blown away the stuffiness and elitism usually associated with collecting. In spring 2000, Bargain Hunt aired at 11 o'clock each morning on BBC1 four days each week for the 10 week run, capturing the highest morning viewing figures of 1.2 million. A new series was broadcast this Autumn increasing viewing figures to 1.8 million and a new series of 36 shows is planned for broadcast starting March 2001. In the show David visits sale rooms and show grounds with two teams who have to buy then sell on a budget. The winner is the team who makes the most money. This book is a field guide to the do's and don'ts of buying antiques from auctions and salerooms to fairs and shops. In addition it will contain a comprehensive A-Z guide to the sales and antique auctions across the country and lists of addresses and telephone numbers, making it a true pocket reference work.

2.0 out of 5 stars short and missing the point, 7 July 2003
This review is from: Dickinson's Bargain Hunter's Handbook (Paperback)
well, it's all very well but for the price i really expected a little more. of approx 160 pages the last 80 - yes, half the book - is an unrated list of auctions and fairs, which again is all very well, but has been covered elsewhere - and any serious buyer would presumably need to make sure they had regular updated access to auction information, such as from the antiques trade gazette, so i can't see that this list is a great help. what's more, every few pages some anodyne statement is blown up to fill a half-page - i mean, really anodyne, not something useful that you'd need to remember and so would justify the mammoth font. i wouldn't mind if it all felt a little more substantial. it's readable enough and probably contains some good advice but i'd recommend judith miller's 'how to make money out of antiques' since it's about half the price and at least as informative (still rather thin, though). not that i rate quantity over quality, but the impression i get from this book is that mr dickinson wrote it in a spare afternoon while waiting for his auction to come up...

5.0 out of 5 stars A great pocket guide, with invaluable lists and references., 10 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Dickinson's Bargain Hunter's Handbook (Paperback)
David Dickinson the flamboyant presenter of BBC Bargain Hunt sets out his favourite tips in this very useful and entertaining book. Fitting easily into your pocket as you set off on your own Bargain Hunting adventure, it will give you guidance and tips on buying and selling antiques at all types of fairs, shops, sales and auctions. Written with David's familiar candor there are even anecdotes nestled in to keep you entertained all taken from his personal experience of the trade gleaned over 25 years. There are no illustartions but the information is set out in a very accessible fashion. If you're not sure where to start looking or what to look for it will help you out there too, with invlauable lists of places to visit throughout England, Scotland and Wales, including phone numbers and even web addresses where appropriate. There's also sound advice on how and what to start collecting. It enables you to go out and start asking informed questions and acquiring knowledge to help you build a collection to enjoy and treasure. And remember you've got a lot longer than 'just one hour to get out there and find a bargain'
