A fascinating portrait of the river at the height of its Victorian prosperity. On the upper Thames it was the carefree era of regattas and riverside picnics, while London's tideway and great docks were busy with the comings and goings of barges, steamers and sailing ships servicing the world's largest port and the Empire on which the sun never set. This treasure trove of a book has descriptions of the villages and towns along the river from its source near Cricklade to the Nore Lightship. It is packed with practical advice, maps of popular destinations, locations of angling and bathing spots. Riverside inns to accommodate oarsmen are listed with details of how to return boats by train at a time when an annual season ticket between Windsor and Paddington cost as little as GBP18.

This is not a book for cover-to-cover reading but one to consult as required. I am very satisfied with it but it will be some time before I can properly judge it. I am interested in the introduction of early steam boats which must have affected ports and docks. Their introduction involved a competition with the sailing ships of the time and I assumed I would see aspects of mid-1800's changes to docks and navigation referenced. I was correct; also the introduction of steam to narrow boats My award of * * * does not imply inferiority in any way so much as the impossibility of awarding * * * * * at this stage of its use. Had the book been much more expensive I might not have bought it but that would not have been a reflection of its quality so much as the depth of my pocket. It arrived sooner than anticipated. Stan
