Product Description

In September 1860 Dickens burnt thousands of letters on a bonfire at his home at Gad’s Hill Place in Kent. He also wrote to friends asking them to destroy any letters that they had received from him. We know that Dickens had always kept secrets from his friends and relatives. When he was a child his father was arrested for debt and sent to the Marshalsea Prison in Southwark. Yet during his lifetime he only told two people about this event. The same is true of his experiences working in the Warren's Blacking Factory. Dickens admitted he had fears about what biographers would say about him in the books written after his death. Why was Dickens so ashamed about these events and what influence did it have on his work? This biography attempts to answer these questions. It also includes a large collection of primary sources so that the reader can make up their own mind about this deeply flawed genius.

Dickens: A Biography

If,like myself, you appreciate both the writing of Charles Dickens and enjoy biographies then this ebook is an excellent choice.

John Simkin writes in an easy to read style and freely acknowledges his sources. Like myself, you will probably be surprised and not always agreeably, by many aspects of Dickens' life and character. However, given his upbringing you may have sympathy for his defects.

Like authors before and since, many of Dickens' most memorable characters and events in his books are based on real life experiences.

For lovers of Dickens, students and anyone interested in the life of one of our greatest authors this is a must, especially at the price of less than a pint of beer. Buy it - you won't be disappointed!

This book does exactly what it says on the tin! A no frills biography of the great man in convenient chronological order. It allows the reader to access the salient details of his entire fascinating life with sourced references to allow further detailed study. It offers explanations of how Dickens's personal experiences influenced his novels and for anyone new to Dickens or revisiting his work( like myself ) the ebook forms a very convenient companion. I read it on my Samsung tablet and found the searchable text particularly useful. It has stimulated me to read his novels anew with a better understanding of some of the reasons for his narratives. It has put his novels in context.
Worth every penny of the £2.95.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling biography 24 Oct 2012

This intriguing, comprehensive and revealing biography provides the reader with a clear insight into the life of Dickens, which is rather dark and verges on the sinister. The book is well written and easy to read. It provides a wealth of detail, well supported with evidence from those who knew him, together with a variety of opinion from modern sources.
I would recommend this biography to anyone who wishes to enhance their understanding of Dickens and his works, especially the less well known sides of his character, that he strived to keep hidden from the public.
