Product Description

Anita Harris, Kenneth Connor, Frank Thornton, Bernie Winters and Michael Robbins star in this traditional pantomime, recorded in front of a live audience and first broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on Christmas Day 1982. Featuring rousing songs and terrible jokes, it's perfect seasonal entertainment for all the family. Oh, yes it is.

Oh no it isn't! 12 Dec 2011

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Pantomime is essentially a visual experience. For many the first time visit to a theatre is to a panto. The red plush seats, the safety curtain, the lights dimming, the orchestra tuning up then the curtain goes up to (probably) the Village Green with the chorus and the legs of the Principal Boy. Of course as this is a recording of a radio broadcast that is all missing. All we are left with is the story, the corny jokes and the music and as far as that goes it is pretty modest. The story of this panto follows traditional lines. As it was recorded in 1982 the music is dated. The jokes are also dated especially those that were topical in 1982! I found the whole thing tedious.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This may be good old pantomime fun but I listened to it long after the mince pies were a jaded memory and enjoyed every minute.

I didn't realise in 1982 my sense of humour was so crummy. The jokes are terrible but, like bad B-movies, they capture you and draw you in. I loved it and have now put it on my shelf to re-listen this coming December. Oh yes I will.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
A traditional pantomime produced for radio, this has all the traditional characters, jokes and lines associated with panto (oh yes it does...) delivered by a top notch cast. Kenneth Connor and Frank Thornton are always good value, and on form here. It's an amusing and entertaining hour of silly panto fun. Especially interesting is the liner notes, detailing the history of pantomime and Dick Whittington. A fascinating little essay and a cut above the usual BBC audio liner notes.

4 stars.

Rather dated but enjoyably awful
This is one of a series of Radio Pantos from the early '80s the BBC have recently released, and they are very much of their time - the cast are sitcom and variety stars of the era,... Read more

Great fun - oh yes it is
I listened to this with my young daughters and they loved it, so did I. It's such a pity they don't make em like this anymore.

Any good? Oh no, it's not...
While panto is still going strong on stage, the BBC's tradition of putting on radio and TV pantos of their own seems to have died out long ago, and from the evidence of this 1982... Read more

Lot of fun...
I was surprised at the quality of the CD,The recording is very clear.I thought that it would be difficult to turn Panto in to an audio production but this cast does it with ease. Read more

The children laughed, I didn't...
I feel that I should start by saying that I find the concept of a 'radio pantomime' a little odd - surely slapstick humour such as that of a pantomime is a largely visual medium? Read more
