Dick Barton - Special Agent [DVD] [1948]
For anyone that listened as a child to the BBC Radio serials of the exploits of Dick Barton with Snowey and Jock will enjoy this 1979 TV reincarnation, it is very faithful to the original if my memory serves me right.
Retaining Radio fifteen minute episode format each completed with a cliff-hanger this is nostalgia at its best, and vastly superior to the three films from the late 1940s which are also available on DVD.
Tony Vogel as Dick Barton and Anthony Heaton as Snowey White are exactly as I used to imagine them, however Jock Anderson (James Cosmo) with his period fair isle jumpers is a little too homely for me.
Just one warning, the titles run in front of a rapidly revolving circle with disappearing black bands that may disturbed anyone troubled by strobe lighting and flash photography.
This is highly recommended nostalgia for anyone that enjoyed the original Radio Serials (722 episodes in all) and some of the cringe making patriotic dialogue is all part of the fun, however anyone coming to these serials from a modern perspective will be somewhat bewildered and probably disappointed.
