Biography

Sparks - short biog

The artists who would come to be known for posterity as Sparks commenced inventing their often-copied, seldom-equaled brand of music back around 1970, when pop was young and brash and the Southern California airwaves awash with a contingent of post-British invasion inspirations like The Kinks, Barretts Floyd, and The Seeds. The purchase of countless shiny-sleeved ... Read more in Amazon's Sparks Store

Inveterate L.A. art-rockers Sparks leave their dance/electronica fixations in the dust to bring forth possibly one of the most ardent and potent rock singles to come out in aeons.

It is a sad, bitter story of a once successful businessman losing everything he has in life and realising that there is nothing more that he has to do in life.

Beautiful, luxuriant orchestras alternate with a shocking blast of heavy metal with a moshing chorus. Imagine Slayer meets Phantom Of The Opera and Queen, and this is what you'll get.

"Waterproof" is a great singalong about a heartless bastard who doesn't give in to his girlfriend's crying in order to please her. It starts of as a nice delicate ballet piece until it suddenly explodes into a glam rock stomper with nice Freddie Mercury-ish vocals.

Don't buy a copy of this single. Buy 10 copies, and help Sparks get back into the Top 40, where they rightfully belong.

What more is there to be said? This song is enormously representative of the rest of the material on 'Hello Young Lovers'; large and masterful arrangements, complex lyrics sung at breathtaking speed, multi-layered harmonies and a thrill from one end to the other. Many compare this song (and the rest of their current output) to other bands, but none of these really hit on the exact nature of what Sparks are doing these days; where they are -now- looks very much like where they have been aiming ever since they started in the early 1970s. Saying they sound like someone else is just diluting the fact that what they are up to now is unique in rock music specifically, and probably in music generally. A masterpiece!

Sparks were the most original of groups back in the Seventies and this shows they are still as unique as ever. I can only say to everyone reading this, BUY IT AND PLAY IT. Brilliant.

One of the most adventurous, creative groups of all time unleashes this classic Sparks tune, complete with great feline frolics video. One of my favorite recent Sparks songs, plus an interview!
