5.0 out of 5 stars This book tells it like it should be told - secrets revealed, 21 Feb 2005
By A Customer
This book boldly attempts to go where no other has dared to go before - it looks into the mystery that is Dichroic Glass, or to be more precise - Dichroic coatings on glass. It examines the myths and misconceptions that surround this most exotic art glass, strips away the fallacies and legends and puts the record straight in a factual, reasonably easy to understand way. Even if you don't understand how the product is made, it doesn't really matter. What does matter is that the book explains exactly what happens to the colour when the glass is heated, (colour shift) how to predict the final colour even through several firings, and how to avoid the dreaded burnout. (Burnout is the equivelant of de-vit in fusing)
Allong the way, there are other incidentals, like the old chestnut "How to tell which is the coated side?", simply answered. Torchworking dichro is also covered, albeit minimally, as is furnace -worked glass. The tips and techniques section is worthwhile - stencilling effects are also included.
Samples of various work, from large projects to jewellery, but the real "gold" is in the text. The colour shift explanation is worth the price of the book alone, when you consider how much the raw material costs!
If you fuse with dichro - you'll be poking around in the dark unless you read this book. It's a must.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good place to start, 11 Jun 2009
By Mel (UK) - See all my reviews
Bought this book because I wanted to learn more about making my own jewellery and it certainly gave me a very good insight into the basics for a total beginner. It lists everything you need to start working with warm glass and the illustrations and charts were very helpful. The only thing I found with the book is that it was a very short guide and didn't go far into explaining the why's of some of the statements. That aside, it is a very interesting and informative read, which equips you with the basics, starting right from glass cutting techniques (which I found incredibly useful but more advanced users might not).
