Product Description

Product Description

The classic of child therapy. Dibs will not talk. He will not play. He has locked himself in a very special prison. And he is alone. This is the true story of how he learned to reach out for the sunshine, for life . . . how he came to the breathless discovery of himself that brought him back to the world of other children.

Oooo, gosh, a fantastic read. Utterly, utterly fantastic.

Yes - inevitably, it's going to crop up on a fair few reading lists; at the same time, the writing style leaves something to be desired and it is just a wee bit clunky.

HOWEVER!!!

Look beyond that, and this is - to my mind - SUCH a powerful book. It reallyreally isn't about the writing style, the technicalities, blah blah blah. It is - to my mind - an outstandingly powerful book about people and humankind. About letting people grow for themselves, and find themselves with space, and burgeon into being full human beings.

The ideas, humanity and - well - truth behind it are something else. I'd recommend it with all my heart to any parents, or any human being with an interest. It can be read in an afternoon, and there's usually a copy going somewhere on Amazon for under a couple of quid.

If that's too much of an investment for you in terms of either time or money, then steer well clear! But if you're up for taking a chance and seeing what happens, then go for it.

Incredibly powerful on a human level. Gwan! Try it!

Dibs in Search of Self was on my course reading list. However I consider it a novel rather than a text book.It is touchingly written and in fact rather poetic. Most enjoyable.

A great mistake 5 Sep 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I read Dibs in the early 1970s and found it very powerful. Since then life has gone on, I've had children and now have a grandson. With my current knowledge, I feel terribly, terribly sorry for the parents of 'Dibs' - everything I read about him in the book shouts of an autistic spectrum disorder, not a child damaged and withdrawn by unrealistic parental expectations. I see parents who desperately tried to help their child and who became utterly deskilled because nothing they did helped. My own grandson is autistic . . .
