A short, simple story which seems to contain the essence of childhood - an easy read which still makes you think. This book is both a warm, involving story of one little boy and his journey through life and also an insight into psychotherapy - how it works and what it can mean to people on a practical level. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and also came away having learnt something about the workings of the human mind, the nature of interactions between people and about myself.

I came across this book at the fresh age of 15 (now ripe age of 28). This booked moved me so much back then, I can honestly say that even back then it made me stop, think and then act.

It started a drive for an understanding of human interaction, as well as a profound respect for the gift of childhood. I don't think I can put into words how this book had changed me, and guides me. It was a starting block which had taken me 15 years to find, I wounder what my life would have been like if my mother or father had read this book while I was growing up.

A must read book - in a must have world!

I feel I had to respond to a previous review written by Rouse, this book is written mainly for anyone currently learning Person Centred Therapy, especially play therapy. The core conditions used in PCT or Rogers' theory are beautifully displayed here. The therapists acceptance, empathy and realness are the key to unlocking him. Being in my 3rd level and studying at diploma level at present I felt this book should be on the core reading list. It has truly taught me more about PCT and its effects than any other text book.
A delight to read, sad and inspiring, its a cliche but you will not put it down. This is an amazing child who did not have the horrific background as the likes of David Pelzer or Genie but neverless without love, affection and acceptance from his parents managed to shut the whole world out.
It has left me hungry to know of Dibs past the age of 15, so far I cannot find a follow up.
