The DVD's in this collection are a fantastic look back into the history of engineering that Britain used to have until governments allowed it to slide away in preference of banking that really shut down manufacturing!! But Fred is really a late lamented character who brought back to our screens a wonderful and exuberant trip into the world of Victorian engineering in the main. The advances made by the famous engineers of the day the hard work put in by many men who trained for many years to get to the top of their trade, and a glimpse at the apprentices who trained under them. I can watch these films for ever they are a real look into the past and hold a great deal of nostalgia for engineering and good old Fred.

I BOUGHT THIS SET ON A RECOMMENDATION BUT IT WAS NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING. RATHER THAN FRED DIBNAH'S WORLD OF STEAM etc IT IS MORE OF A TRIBUTE TO FRED DIBNAH'S LIFE. I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HEAR MORE FROM HIM AND LESS OF THE TRIBUTES. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A TRIBUTE TO FRED IT IS WELL DONE, AND THE PRICE IS VERY REASONABLE. IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE PROGRAMES HE MADE, THERE ARE BETTER DVDs.Fred Dibnah's World Of Steam, Steel & Stone Box Set [DVD]

A fair price for a great product. If you are interested in the good old days then this is for you. The youngsters of today should watch and learn from this.

As someone has already said this is a lie. This is not the programs made by Fred Dibnah it is a load of clips interspersed with what other people think. It is a con and a rip-off you can probably get your money back under the trade descriptions act. The box says nothing about it being a hacked piece of television designed to make someone a load of money. What a rip off. I sat down to re-live the joy he gave me in life and now I am totally disheartened.

Fred seems these days to have spawned many different series on many different topics, so much so it can be hard keeping up with them all. This box set set as it were collates all of these and cherry picks what is best - that is what seemed best to Dibnah, rather than waht his viewers perhaps found best. Not that this detracts but if you are expecting a greatest hits of him you won't get it here.

What you will get incisive commentary and thoughts from him on a wide range of diverse topics, and also from many other people as well. Most of it thought provoking, all interesting and well worth watching. From that viewpoint the volumes are excellent.

One annoying problem though is that the background music is too loud, and isn't background! This can be a problem if you have the volume turned down as it's difficult to hear the words, and for those with reduced hearing it could be especially problematic. As such I feel I have to rate this down from 5 stars for this reason.

This boxset is potentially very good, with some very interesting historical narrative by Fred. However, it's rather frustrating to watch as it turns out that this is more of a tribute to Fred, and it feels as though half the playing time is taken up with tributes rather than Fred's valuable/interesting commentary.
