Even though I wouldn't normally read this style of book it was recommended by a friend.
I made a cup of tea on Sunday morning and thought I would make a start.
I was gripped with the first 2 chapters. In between making lunch and then dinner I couldn't put it down and finally had to give in at around midnight with just a few pages to read. This book had a brilliant ending. "or did it"
I have been reading a very popular trilogy since July and still haven't finished it. So this book was a very welcome change as it has everything the other book hasn't.
I can't believe that a writer as brilliant as Steve Emmett hasn't yet got the recognition that he so well deserves.
I hope Mr Emmett can also produce a trilogy. It would be well worth it

A happy family sucked into a good vs bad, world in peril adventure, battling ancient evil in a beautiful setting. For me, this story was the perfect escape at the end of the day. I like my fiction dark, and a deep sense of foreboding is present from the word go - with the Italian setting used to great effect. The author obviously knows the area where Diavolino is set very well, and he paints a wonderful picture, but he brushes the picture postcard scenery with a wash of pervasive darkness. I was quickly drawn into the action - and the pace of the story remained constant. I'm intrigued to see what this author comes up with next.

I don't usually do reviews but this new author is a real find and well worth sharing. He has written one of those page turners that it's a joy to happen upon and difficult to believe it's a first novel. It may seem to be in Dan Brown territory, but the characters are richer and more rounded, the setting is clearly one the author knows well and it really gets the clannish feel of Italian life as well as having a nice sense of history - and the evil is clear and threatening and suppurating. So go ahead and read it and join me in the wait for his next book!
