Product Description

Ever felt like you don't belong?

When Libby Marchant and husband Ned made the monumental decision to sacrifice luxuries and holidays to see their only son Max through private education, they hadn’t expected to meet so many unsavoury and dislikeable personalities along the way.

Happily, the cruel jibes of the pompous ‘Meemies’ are made more tolerable by the lasting and loyal friendship they strike up with the affluent Fenella & Josh.

Follow Libby’s journey as she discovers the chasm between the Haves and the Have-Nots in her mad new world of school committees, designer handbags, bitching and botox.

With Fenella by her side, Libby is able to maintain her sanity. But what happens when the credit crunch bites, you’re desperate for another baby and your Asian neighbour is trying to match-make you with her infatuated son?

Funny Mummy book 10 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
A light and often very funny read. Having put my children through both the state and independent school system I recognised much of what was written here. Some of the characters were stereotypes - in the real world as well as fiction - but non the less funny for that! Sorry if I sound a bit of a Luddite but I really prefer to read off paper and not screens! This would have been infinitely more enjoyable for me if I had been able to curl up in bed with a paperback.

Well worth it 7 Jun 2011

Format:Kindle Edition
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Had a good chuckle and even the odd tear and found I didn't want to stop reading it once I'd started. Loved the characters, a few I recognised from my own life and I could really relate to Libby's character.

I came to this after enjoying the frantic "May contain nuts" by John O'Farrell. I polished this off during a pleasant flight to the Sun - Thank you my lovely little Kindle!

Diary of a Misfit Mummy is a much more anchored, realistic tale of life amongst the Battersea / Fulham set. Lot's of modern cameos - someone will have fun putting this on the screen - all the usual Mumsnet suspects : LK Bennett, Guardian readers, Bankers, Ac-tors, Cath Kidston, Alpha Mummies, Range Rover drivers. Those irreproachably, irredeemably middle class "Social Stereotypes" from the Telegraph.

As a book, it certainly makes you think - why have literally millions given up on Blair's Bog Standard State Schools and Academies in London? Why are nearly a fifth of all Sixth formers in Private Education? And what is it about affluence that makes people even more insecure?

Curious that it's only on Kindle - you'd think it would have been a Blog which turned into a Paperback. Maybe there's a "Julie and Julia" style blog somewhere that I don't know about.

Going back to John O"Farrell's book - "May contain Nuts" was an amusing read, and an entertaining TV play, but would have been better without the exam substitution and ultimate conclusion.

Diary of a Misfit Mummy is the better book -realistic characters, and better social commentary on those terrifying Schoolgate Mothers. Could have done with some more polishing - think of it as the Yummy Mummy's version of the "Manchild" BBC TV series, but I enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to Amanda Egan's next book.

Conclusion: Ideal holiday or commuter read - for Mumsnet Mummies and their, almost, patient husbands.
