Product Description

Lucia MacNamara pines for the family and loved ones she was forced to leave behind in Co. Kerry. She swears she will go back one day. The only problem is: Lucia is a cat.

Lucia, the cultured kitty of Kerry, is torn from her rural idyll of lazy days and nights of poetry and story telling beneath the stars to become London’s fluffiest illegal immigrant. Smuggled via ferry and rucksack by her new owners’ children, this is the story of how Lucia the muse of Kerry, becomes Lucia, the latch key Wimbledon wanderer. Hooking up with London’s other lost feline souls she recounts their urban adventures along with her own. To cope with her ex-pat pain, Lucia starts a journal documenting the tangled lives of her new owners’ stress-fuelled urban lifestyles and their attempts to deal with the daily round of love, loss, comedy, betrayal and … microwave dinners. Not to mention the mad Irish aunts, Olga the designer spy, Bruiser the alcoholic pub cat, Amy the loony BBC arts producer, the Czech Secret Police and the lost vineyards. You know. The usual!!

I wanted to read this one slowly to make it last... but I couldn't hold back and the pages flew by! this book is funny, very funny. Without shirking on some very painful human stories, told with deep sympathy. But like a classic tragi-comedy, our tears are saved by a concatenation of deux ex machina twists that lead us joyfully to a happy crescendo finale, which you'd have to be a real sourpuss (pun intended) not to enjoy! This is a warm, perceptive portrait of us humans struggling through our everyday - and some definitely not everyday - tribulations and hard-won triumphs, brought to us by a very special feline. In sharing her diaries, Lucia the cultured teenage cat gives us a keenly observed, sharply focused - well we know how good cat's eyes are - microcosm of a very local London that, as London does, teems with all manner of fauna and flora, and embraces the exuberant diversity and dark dramas of this world. In one line? The fact is, I always hated cats, but after reading this book, I look around me now and wish I had one - now there's a recommendation!

Cat as narrator has been done before and better. This is still a very pleasant book, however. For self-published authors, though, it would be a good idea to have someone else read through the manuscript before it is printed. Errors such as "lead" for the past tense of "to lead" and "Bondei Beach" make it look amateurish and distract from the book's genuine charm.

An enjoyable read 8 Dec 2006
Format:Paperback
This is a book for anyone who knows how clever and wise cats can be but even if you do not, this is an enjoyable read. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the antics of Lucia (Fluffy to her owner) who was removed from her beloved Kingdom of Kerry to the centre of London, and also of her owner's extended family, the London and Kerry Macs. Lucia is indeed a cultured cat, who learnt French and partakes of exotic take-outs. I do not usually enjoy books 'by animals' but I liked the humour and nostalgia here. I felt the author catches very well the ache or longing someone can have for the place of their childhood. One wonders throughout if she will return or will something else intervene .......
