Product Description

Review

"Diane Fitzgerald, the queen of beautiful beadweaving, takes us on an adventure into creating three-dimensional beaded geometric shapes. Start with two-dimensional shapes and learn how to properly increase and decrease to create angles and curves. Then, move on to create open shapes, and then finally the awesome three-dimensional designs like you see on the cover. Intimidated? Don't be! Diane is a magnificent teacher and takes good care to make sure her students are successful!" - Bead Unique magazine, October 2011 "The illustrations are clear, the instructions concise, and there are lots of inspirational photos throughout. For anyone interested in understanding geometric beadwork, this book is a must-have." - Bead&Button magazine "A true breakthrough in the art of beadwork." - Booklist

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a let-down 14 Nov 2009
By Z. Herbert VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I've always enjoyed Ms Fitzgerald's books and I have learned a lot from them. When I saw this new one, I had to have it. The shaped beads and the techniques for making them are fascinating and I enjoyed looking at the samples and trying to follow the instructions.

Sadly, this is where this could-be-wonderful book falls down. There are too many errors to be excused as just one of those unfortunate things. Yes, I know corrigenda are available from the author's web site. There are two A4 pages of corrections and Ms Fitzgerald does not seem unduly concerned about that.

The worst is yet to come: the corrections have errors, too. Enough said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic! 10 April 2009
By Cha Cha
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed Diane's last book (Zulu beadwork)so decided to order a copy of Shaped Beadwork from Amazon.com as Amazon.co.uk didn't seem to have any! I was totally amazed at the amount of work Diane put into this book. It's not only fantastic, but also quite unique! The diagrams are clear, the basic geometric shapes are truly fun to stitch, I have already made myself a pair of triangular earrings and they were easy to create! I hadn't used this technique before. Peyote wasn't one of my favourite stitches but I think it might turn into it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice book but not happy with the many errors 13 Dec 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Bought this book just after publication to add to my ever expanding library of beading books. I love the projects and the ideas but found some of the instructions hard to follow and thought it was just a mental block. It was only months later that I discovered the list of errata on Diane Fitzgerald's web site and her somewhat dismissive attitude towards these many mistakes is annoying. Perhaps there is a lesson to be learned from this, the specialist bead magazines would seem to have all the contributor's designs made up to ensure that the patterns and instructions actually work. Lark Books might like to take cognisance of this fact before publishing a beadweaving master class book! Certainly not a book that I would recommend for a beginner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait.... 4 Jun 2009
By teribus
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I too waited months for Amazon to fill this order, before I found it available in other buying options. Glad I didn't give up!
I usually only have the confidence to follow what someone else has designed. This is the first time I've opened a book and felt immediately that it was a starting point for designing my own work. The illustrations and text are very clear, and the book is organised so that you can progress through it if you choose, or dip in and out.
If you enjoy peyote, you will enjoy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice book - good designs 3 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is a nice book with some lovely designs. I would have given it 5 stars except that i wasn't keen on the way you had to refer to different parts of the book for starting off your project. But maybe that was just me, trying more advanced projects for my skill level!

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a really good book despite teh typos 15 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover
I would disagree with the poor review because of the typos - there are some excellent shapes in here that make really different and unusual things that I havent seen elsewhere. Yes I agree that typos are annoying, but go to Diane's site to get the corrections - and get the book and drool. I had to wait for mine, but definately worth it and I keep it by the bed just to dip into. Friends of mine have gone bonkers making all the shapes and they do come out well.
