Book Description

1 Oct 2011
Called 'the High Priestess of Fashion,' Diana Vreeland (1903-1989) was an American original whose impact on fashion and style in her time was legendary. Beginning in 1936, when she became a fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar, Vreeland established herself as a controversial visionary who had an astonishing ability to invent and discover fashion ideas, designers, personalities and photographers. She continued to be a force in fashion throughout her long career, eventually becoming editor-in-chief of "Vogue magazine" (1962-70) and muse-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute (1972-89). "Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" was created by Lisa Vreeland, a filmmaker and fashion consultant. "Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" chronicles fifty years of international fashion. With 350 illustrations, including many famous photographs by Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and other major fashion photographers, it is an intensely visual book that shows fashion as it is being invented, through the pages of magazines that shaped taste through their superb fashion editing, photography, and art direction.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Eye of the beholder! 1 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
In conjunction with the exhaustive biography by Eleanor Dwight this new publication gives us a chance to see what all the fuss was about. The magical story telling of many contemporary designers and the spell cast by catwalk and moving image inventions can be traced directly back to Vreeland.(See Tim Walker, Lucinda Chambers, Grace Coddington, etc) She imbued fashion with a real vitality which yes, reflected the 60's and 70's style revolutions but her creative flair was totally individual and had started long before her Vogue years.
At a time when the world is in danger of bland commercial statements (I am looking at Celine) it is good to be reminded that wild inventions in the manner of Poiret or Balenciaga (His clothes were never about compromise or commerciality even though he sold well at his peak and had a huge effect on fashion trends, this was never where his interest lay)are the life blood of fashion and style. Deanne had it to her fingertips and every pore of her body.
Magazines like Pop and Love often reference her wildest excesses with Verushka and others, showing how her influence transcends time. Grace Mirabella replaced Diana Vreeland at Vogue - I don't see a book of her layouts and ideas forthcoming? (Sorry Ms Mirabella Yes she increased the circulation but is that all fashion is about -figures? Of course we must make money, and if your clothes are so fantastic no one actually buys or wears them you are not really a successful designer. There MUST however be a happy medium and without the spellbinders and storytellers we are lost.
This is a book about an enchantress; if you have any interest in style, or want to know why she was great this is a "must buy"

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have for Vreeland Fans! 7 Oct 2011
By MMasiA - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Great book with very insightful essay by Judith Thurman and touching comments by Avedon made at Vreeland's memorial service. Some of the pictures of Vreeland at work and play are rare and really convey her spirit and love of life.

The fashion spreads edited by Vreeland were also fantastic but the layout of the fashion shoots from the Bazaar years could have been better--I really wanted to read the articles accompanying some of the Bazaar fashion spreads but the print was too small on several. Apart from this minor quibble, I loved this book and strongly recommend it to all Vreeland fans. The quality is excellent and the book conveys the enormous effort made by the author to gather as much of Vreeland's editorial work as possible in one volume. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars APT TRIBUTE TO A SINGULAR WOMAN 14 Oct 2011
By Gail Cooke - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Called "the High Priestess of Fashion," Diana Vreeland is remembered for her impact on fashion, her limitless vision and, of course, her comments. In reply to a question, she said, "What do I think about the way most people dress? Most people are not something one thinks about." At another time she noted, "Too much good taste can be boring." If there was one thing Vreeland was not it was boring. We're reminded of that in this one-of-a-kind volume brimming with 350 illustrations - apt tribute to a singular woman.

From Abrams Books: "Diana Vreeland (1903-1989) was an American original whose impact on fashion and style was legendary. Beginning in 1936, when she became a fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar, Vreeland established herself as a controversial visionary with an astonishing ability to invent and discover fashion ideas, designers, personalities, and photographers. She was a memorable writer with a vivid personality and a talent for coining aphorisms. Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel chronicles 50 years of international fashion and Vreeland's rich life. With more than 350 illustrations, including original magazine spreads and many famous photographs, this intensely visual book shows fashion as it was being invented, and how Vreeland shaped American taste through her superb vision."

Vreeland was not only singular but unstoppable as she served as editor-in-chief of Vogue from 1962-70, and advisor to the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute from 1971 - 89.

Those with an interest in fashion will treasure this volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diana Vreeland was a rare event like a comet . . . 8 Dec 2011
By Alexandra Chace - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Diana Vreeland was a rare event like a comet, a irrepeatable phenomenon, which our master astronomer Lisa Immordino Vreeland explores and defines in this exciting book.

It is an astronomical task to follow on the tail of the infinite world of Diana Vreeland. Yet the author acutely follows her goal to build an energetic vision of this complex and often contradictory woman. The selected images and descriptions create tension and drama as one travels from page to page. The glitter is often contrasted by dark, almost frightening moments.

The velocity of Diana Vreeland's eye is well documented demonstrating how a real comet is always in the future. Her qualities continue to shine with brilliance and fascinate as does this excellent personal portrait of an extraordinary woman. I highly recommend "The Eye has to Travel" by Lisa Immordino Vreeland.
