I first read this book when I was a teenager, and it captivated me instantly, due to a combination of the author's style (this is always important to me) and an inaginitive yet believable plot.
I first read it after seeing it dramatised on BBC tv, and would love to watch it again now that I'm in my thirties...but I cannot find any details of it on video or dvd... Written from the viewpoint of the male protganist, this is a story about a young working class man's infatuation with a lively young woman of the upper class which turns to deep enduring love, despite opposition and separation, and their involvment in the second world war. It is not a romance in the sense of a walking off into the subnset at the end but it is a book about love, the fullfillment and unfullfillment of love, and its consequences.

A must for any romantic's library. The story follows the life of John Leigh, poor, orphaned and left to the upbringing of a mottly colection of uncles in a west country village with little prospect of any 'real' life. But John's life is spun around and taken over by the chance meeting with Diana, daughter of a wealthy business man and his snobish wife. An impossible friendship, joint love of the west country and a teenage romance much to the horror of Diana's parents leads to a prolonged seperation, chance meetings and the development of John into a man worthy of note. John's life is devoted to winning back Diana and the approval of her family. However, his efforts are punctuated by the onset of the second world war where he rediscovers Diana, married to a conspiritor and fighting with the French resistance. With a child John had never known, they attempt to rebuild a life together but John is 'volunteered' for a suicide mission. With the failure of the mission and John's life at stake Diana plans a rescue resulting in her own capture. John, recovered from a near fatal injury and bitter by the thought of Diana dead, falls into the ruthless killing of the enemy until chance brings him to Diana again as a POW and a further reckless escape...
This is not a story of 'happy ever after' but a very moving tale of love and loss of the deepest kind. Despite many readings it has never failed to move me to tears.

I enjoyed this book, it is a tragic love story that weaves through the years in the lives of Jan and Diana skilfully written in a very descriptive manner. Delderfield really conjours up the atmosphere of the countryside and nature, he excels in that field and his obvious love of the outdoors comes through to the reader, pretty similar in that way to Thomas Hardy. At times I found the book a little slow but then it would pick up pace again and keep me reading to see what the outcome would be and the end to the love story. A very pleasant read not too challenging a good book to take on holiday to relax with.
