Some recitals just get better with time and this is one of them. Having heard Ms Bonney live twice in Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, I had fallen under the spell of her great charm and musicality as a performer. When this recital was first released, however, I was a little sceptical, as I'd got to know virtually all the repertoire through four individual discs by Anne Sofie von Otter (all hail). I was not convinced that Barbara Bonney, as a light lyric, could add anything to my enjoyment of the songs. I love to be proven wrong. What she sometimes lacks in power in the bottom of her range, she more than makes up with the silvery tones at the top and her musicianship and insight can rival that of her great friend and mezzo colleague (they sang at each other's weddings - I wonder if they sold tickets).
It is extremely difficult to pick highlights out of this disc, as the entire package is one sustained delight. The Grieg and Sibelius songs might be more familiar to a lot of listeners, but the Stenhammer, Alfven and Sjoberg contributions are well worth listening to until they become equally familiar. Bonney's approach throughout is direct and clear, delivering the songs with absolute conviction and great though never overstated attention to mood and detail. It is as if she pours her every talent into every utterance and those talents are formidable. In Andrew Palmer's book "Divas - in their own words", Bonney states "I don't think of myself as a singer per se, a woman with a marvelous instrument. My voice is there, but I use it simply because singing happens to be the medium through which I express the music I have in me." On the strength of this recital alone, that "music" is nothing short of masterly.

Barbara Bonney has the ideal voice for this music. It has a purity that suits the nordic sound perfectly. Her technique is breathtaking, especially in the way she can grow the sound without changing the quality of the voice.
She is especially good in the Grieg songs. Just listen what she does with Fra Monte Pincio. That song alone makes the whole record.
Antonio Pappano is great at the piano. He plays totally integrated with the singing.

This is a delightful concert on one CD of Scandinavian music sung by the exquisitely beautiful voice of Barbara Bonney, accompanied by Antonio Pappano on the piano. There are some more familiar compositions by Grieg (`Spring'; `Solveig's song', from the incidental music to Peer Gynt; `I love you', often sung by popular balladeers like Frank Sinatra; `A swan') . We then have five offerings from Sibelius (including `The way of the world'; `The time of roses') and then eight songs I had never heard before: five by Wilhelm Stenhammar, two by Hugo Alfven and finally the lovely tribute to `Music' by Carl Sjöberg. If you resonate with the Scandinavian languages, or just want some soothing lullabies beautifully sung and sensitively played, I would have no hesitation in recommending this CD from Decca.

This is one of those very special recordings on which everyone and everything combine to produce something they'll never improve on, jointly or individually. Barbara Bonney is in stunning voice (the best of her entire recording career, in my view); Antonio Pappano's quicksilver accompaniment, infinitely attentive and technically flawless, is fully her equal; and this repertoire - not all of equal stature, but all of it utterly delightful in these interpreters' hands - will never be better represented in the catalogue than it is here. You don't want to miss this.
