The tail-end of this album - last 3 songs - was an anticlimactic let-down for me. The songs: 'Blessed To Be A Witness', 'Picture Of Jesus' and 'She's Only Happy In The Sun' were well constucted pieces but had been heavily touched by the cheese trowel. An annoying finish to a great start.
Nonetheless, this should not put anyone off getting what is otherwise a good album.
I'm one of these people and have ended up at reviews for Ben Harper CD's, particularly "Diamonds On The Inside" but never was in a position to purchase it. On Saturday I was, and I got this CD, expecting something special, and i think it's fair to say that it is.
I have no previous Ben Harper experience to xompare to and so in it's own singular right, I think this is a damned good CD. It shows a great ability to create different styles and sometimes even blend different styles into 1 enclosed space. There are some tracks here that leave you wondering, "Is this a back to roots, singer songwriter rock musician trapped in Jamaica, or Bob Marly wandering around confused in the South Of America?" I like the results that are created and I really feel there is something for everyone here and as such it is a CD well worth listening to. It took me a while to get to it, but i'm glad i have.
With all totally different sounds, 4 of my immediate favourite tacks are "With My Own 2 Hands", "Diamonds On The Inside", "Amen Omen", and "Temporary Remedy". Ben Harper displays a great, and in reviews already recognised, ability to write good music, and great lyrics. One of the best examples are the lyrics in 'Amen Omen' - "What started as a whisper, slowly turned into a scream, searching for an answer where the question is unseen..."
He write good thoughtful songs, he creates in various different styles and from tracks like "picture of jesus" and "Blessed to be a witness" he clearly isn't afraid to experiment with the new, and go back to the roots of what he believes he is musically.
IT's a great CD and will be a great addition to any cd collection. Like i said at the off, if you are reading this, you have more than likely ended here on a purpose. If you've heard a song and like it, buy it, and if this has een recommended to you from someone or somewhere, take their advice.
It's well worth the purchase and you will certainly find time to listen to it. Also, give it time.
