Rock Solid Start With Cheese Ending,
This review is from: Diamonds on the Inside (Audio CD)
'Diamonds on the Inside' is an album worth having. Ben Harper starts well with some great riffs, lyrics, singing and solid slide guitar in tracks such as; 'With My Own Two Hands', 'When It's Good' and 'Bring The Funk'. The bulk of this album is foot-tapping, head-nodding, bring-me-the-funk groovicious stuff and highly enjoyable. The tail-end of this album - last 3 songs - was an anticlimactic let-down for me. The songs: 'Blessed To Be A Witness', 'Picture Of Jesus' and 'She's Only Happy In The Sun' were well constucted pieces but had been heavily touched by the cheese trowel. An annoying finish to a great start. Nonetheless, this should not put anyone off getting what is otherwise a good album.

Ben in all his splendour!,
This review is from: Diamonds on the Inside (Audio CD)
There is no doubt that Ben Harper is one of today's greatest yet lesser appreciated artists. Though not being towed along in mainstream is undoubtedly what makes and keeps him so special, which only makes me happier! As for 'Diamonds on the Inside', after listening to it (which I do very often), I'm always left feeling a little less harrassed by the outside world. Ben thoroughly puts his talents and skills on display in all there wonderous glory. For those not well aquainted with Ben, his music is not just all about spectacular guitar work and solid rock arrangements. He is deeply spiritual, and he unashamedly puts his religious views across in his albums. On this album, tracks 12 and 13 are two beautifully arranged songs which, along with the goosebump making melodies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, convey Ben's beliefs quite emotively. A person can always be sure of getting something completely new from Ben Harper, he is one of a kind!

This Diamond IS Forever,
This review is from: Diamonds on the Inside (Audio CD)
It has to be accepted that reviews are always relative to who is reviewing it, and who is likely to be reading it. Generally, if someone is here looking at a Ben Harper review theres a good chance you'll appreciate it, and as such 5 stars says "Go and buy me".I'm one of these people and have ended up at reviews for Ben Harper CD's, particularly "Diamonds On The Inside" but never was in a position to purchase it. On Saturday I was, and I got this CD, expecting something special, and i think it's fair to say that it is. I have no previous Ben Harper experience to xompare to and so in it's own singular right, I think this is a damned good CD. It shows a great ability to create different styles and sometimes even blend different styles into 1 enclosed space. There are some tracks here that leave you wondering, "Is this a back to roots, singer songwriter rock musician trapped in Jamaica, or Bob Marly wandering around confused in the South Of America?" I like the results that are created and I really feel there is something for everyone here and as such it is a CD well worth listening to. It took me a while to get to it, but i'm glad i have. With all totally different sounds, 4 of my immediate favourite tacks are "With My Own 2 Hands", "Diamonds On The Inside", "Amen Omen", and "Temporary Remedy". Ben Harper displays a great, and in reviews already recognised, ability to write good music, and great lyrics. One of the best examples are the lyrics in 'Amen Omen' - "What started as a whisper, slowly turned into a scream, searching for an answer where the question is unseen..." He write good thoughtful songs, he creates in various different styles and from tracks like "picture of jesus" and "Blessed to be a witness" he clearly isn't afraid to experiment with the new, and go back to the roots of what he believes he is musically. IT's a great CD and will be a great addition to any cd collection. Like i said at the off, if you are reading this, you have more than likely ended here on a purpose. If you've heard a song and like it, buy it, and if this has een recommended to you from someone or somewhere, take their advice. It's well worth the purchase and you will certainly find time to listen to it. Also, give it time.
