5.0 out of 5 stars Diamond in the Window, 13 Sep 2003
By A Customer
I read this book years ago - proabably when I about ten or so and the feelings it evoked have stayed with me, if not the ins and outs of the story. I remember different worlds, treasure and a bitter sweet story. It's one of the books I have always wanted to re-read and set me on the path of being a Fantasy fan. With two children approaching that age I wanted to relive it and share the book with them; I searched Amazon in the hope that I would find a reference. And it's been published again. Fantastic. I can't wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best children's novels ever written, 2 July 2001
By A Customer
The Diamond in the Window not only made me a reader, it made me a writer too (for adults, so far). A mystery, a quest, a magical adventure rooted in the reality of small-town New England life it's one of the most exciting and funny books ever written. I'm THRILLEd it's reprinted, having pestered UK bookshops for years to see if it's still around. For anyone who hasn't read it, Eleanor and Edward live with their Aunt Lily and batty Uncle Fred, a former Trancendentalist philosopher. Neither has got over the mysterious disappearance of the Indian Prince Krishna, who disappeared along with Ned and Nora, their younger brother and sister. But Eleanor and Edward start to discover what went wrong when they sleep in the attic window with a "diamond" in it. Their dreams, at first pleasant, of finding Prince Krishna's treasure, turn into nightmares in which they can be really hurt. The best thing about this novel is that it introduces children to complex ideas about nature and morality, while remaining completely thrilling. I read it recently to my own eight year old and now my six year old is also hooked. I'm going to buy it for all the children I love. Please, please reprint The Swing in the Summerhouse too!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book which helped make me who I am today!, 30 Nov 1999
By A Customer
I can't believe this book is back in print again! I first read it and its partner The Swing in the Summerhouse (reprint this one PLEASE!)about 25 years ago, and it changed the way I felt about books. The childrens adventures are set in fantasy but have a grounding which is very firmly in the real world, and have a message for us which I have never forgotten. I thought too that I was the only one who had ever read it, and have spent a large part of my life trying to share it with others, made much easier now by the reissue! I have the original hardbacks of the pair bought from a surplus library sale many years ago, and guard them like gold. Everyone should read this book no matter what their age - it is one of the best childrens' books ever written, for adults too!
