Product Description

Product Description

This Wordsworth Edition includes an exclusive Introduction and Notes by Stuart Hutchinson, University of Kent at Canterbury.

The Diamond as Big as the Ritz is an ominous fable about the pursuit of great wealth. Readers will be transported to a fabulous fantasy land of such opulence that its very existence has to remain a jealously guarded secret.

Fatal consequences lie in store for 'bona fide' guests and uninvited visitors alike, while the sybaritic luxury of the place is evoked in an effortless prose style which is quintessentially F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Also featured in this volume are The Cut-Glass Bowl, May Day, The Rich Boy, Crazy Sunday, An Alcoholic Case, The Lees of Happiness, The Lost Decade and Babylon Revisited.

Fitzgerald shows he was not only an exceptional novelist, the author of classics such as "The Great Gatsby" and "Tender Is The Night" to name but two. In this collection of his short stories, we see a selection of poignant tales, revealing the depths of human sadness and the emotional void at the heart of glamour that Fitzgerald understood so well. Any fan of American literature or of short fiction must own this collection.

Rich stories 26 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I sometimes am a little put off reading Scott's short stories as he clearly didn't enjoy writing them, but was forced to to make a living whilst he worked on his novels. Some he considered quite tacky (and these were the more lucrative ones); others, less lucrative, he took seriously and invested time in. The Ritz falls into this category and absolutely sparkles with brilliance. It might be an allegorical tale but its main message seems to be a challenge to the absurdities of ridiculously immense wealth. It is also a very funny story.

The whole of the collection is wonderful and includes some of his best stories, such as May Day and the Lees of Happiness. If ever a writer wrote 'from life' Fitzgerald did (even if the Ritz is a fantasy story). The best of this collection is May Day; read this and it will stay with you for days.

Format:Paperback
Good book for taking on holiday or a bedside read. Also a good introduction to this famous author before tackling full length stories.
