Marsha Linehan's DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) has proved useful and incredibly popular in treatting a wide range of clinical populations who were traditionally considered 'difficult' or untreatable, such as those with Borderline Personality Disorder or suicidal behaviour.

DBT is necessarily complex and includes a dizzying range of skills, treatment strategies and terminology that befuddle both client and therapist alike. The core texts by Marsha Linehan are packed with detail and I found them difficult to wade through. This book represents an attempt to translate the skills component of DBT into a more user-friendly format for use with young people and is very sucessful at that.

The book is divided into three parts:

Part I: DBT Skills
Part II: 101 Mindfulness actvities
Part III: DBT Games and Activities

I was disappointed with Parts II and III, particualrly the section on '101 Mindfulness Activities', which consists of such gems as 'blow bubbles and pop them' and 'complete a crossword puzzle'. I was expecting scripts for guided practice and found instead a rather simple list of activities.

I also found Part III of the book equally disappointing, consistign mainly of crosswords and word search puzzles that I wouldn't have the patience for now, never mind as an adolescent.

In short, this book is most useful as a supplement to the Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder (Diagnosis & Treatment of Mental Disorders) as it includes many handouts that are adapted for use with young people. Those looking for ideas for mindfulness practice and games for use with young people would probably be better off looking elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Group work 7 Aug 2009

I use this book for a group we run in an adolescent mental health inpatient unit. We are not trained in DBT but like the approach and are trying to secure funding for the training. In the meantime we use the approach.
I find this book easy to use, with handouts on one side of the page and "how to do it" on the other. The sheets are easy to use and geared at a simple enough level for most of our clients to take the message on board despite their current difficulties.
I initially bought the book as I was getting stuck in thinking about mindfulness activities that are fun and easy to explain, and that we haven't done before recently. As our OT uses sensory integration in her groups, our icebreakers and mindfulness exercises tend to overlap!
I have found that this book has helped me to organise my groups, to help educate staff newish to the concepts of DBT, and the exercises can be short enough to grab the young peoples attention

4.0 out of 5 stars Group work friendly 29 Sep 2009

I liked the format of this workbook for use in groups. I have utilized it as a supplement to group exercises and found it easy to use. I have found that the format of this workbook is easier to use than Linehan's skills manual as the Linehan manual seems geared more for academic study than application.
