Dermoscopic Diagnosis – at a Glance

Dermoscopy has been proven to improve diagnostic accuracy of dermatologic lesions. This practical textbook – based on a road–tested training program in dermoscopy – introduces you to the basics of dermoscopy. Easy–to–view icons show the dermoscopic features of lesions. These are compared over handy two–page spreads with actual dermoscopic and clinical images to show the lesion in practice.

The identification of global and local features of skin lesions through the dermoscope will help you incorporate dermoscopy into your everyday practice. The simple but effective visual approach to pattern recognition will enable you to teach yourself and your colleagues the power of dermoscopy.

Covering melanocytic lesions, melanomas, non–melanocytic lesions, special sites, and general dermatological lesions, Diagnostic Dermoscopy gives you:

·         A guide to choosing and using the dermoscope most suited to your needs

·         An introduction to the dermoscopic alphabet

·         A visual guide to the global features of dermatologic disease through the dermoscope

·         A more detailed look at the local structure of skin lesions for more accurate diagnosis

This proven approach to learning the language and skills of dermoscopy will enable you, as a dermatologist, plastic surgeon, family practitioner or dermatologic nurse, to improve your diagnostic accuracy and clinical efficiency.

4.0 out of 5 stars As someone new to dermoscopy very useful., 19 Nov 2011
Recently attended the PCDS 'introduction to dermoscopy' where Bowling [author] was one of the main speakers. He gave an inspiring talk expressing the problems with scoring systems, and his preferred approach into developing an understanding of key features you should be looking for (often the basis of scoring systems which he does list in the book) and when certain patterns are seen or not seen so that you know when to refer. This approach is great for primary care (GPs).

This book is mainly images with just a little bit of text, introducing you to the language of dermoscopy, and as such this book complements his talk, and reinforces his teaching and approach. Could there be more text explanation - probably, but as the title suggests this is all about the diagnosis rather than a text-book on skin lesions.

I purchased in kindle format, this was in full colour and has very good images. I loved the icons used throughout the book - summarises key patterns features of lesions very well.
The only downside is at times the layout in kindle format can be confusing, the nice two page spread used in the paper version is lost, with kindles use of sections. Often the page/section break occurs after the label so the image is on the next page, and it's not always easy to see if the text label applies to the picture above or below the label. (label is always first then picture, just need to remember that.)

I like Bowlings approach and thoroughly recommend this book for newcomers to dermoscopy in primary care. (especially if you have heard Bowling speak).

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book!, 8 Dec 2011
By Heather - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Diagnostic Dermoscopy: The Illustrated Guide (Kindle Edition)
This book is appalling. It is poorly formatted for kindle, with heading titles across several pages at times. The text associated with photos frequently is on a different page to the photo, and the text that is on the same page as a photo often refers to a previous or future phot.

The photos are tiny to the point of being useless, and when you attempt to enlarge them the photos are out of focus. Dermoscopy is about the small features. This book doesn't demonstrate them. I understand now why photos weren't available on the preview.

I'm sorry I wasted my money on this text and would encourage you not to do the same.
