Product Description

32 song double CD version with 60-page booklet inclusive of 40 vintage photographs, 24 interviews and documented first-hand knowledge. In the mid-20th century, African music made its way to Colombia's vibrant port city of Barranquilla. After five years, in which seven expeditions were made to Barranquilla, Analog Africa is honoured to present "Diablos del Ritmo," an anthology of - and tribute to - the immense sound of 1970s Colombia. Thousands of records were collected, boiling down to a colourfully diverse selection of 32 tracks split between Afrobeat, Palenque Sounds, Tropical Funk, Terapia and psychedila rhythms on Part 1 and an array of danceable tropical rhythms of Puya, Porro, Gaita, Cumbiamba, Mapalé, Chandéon on Part 2. The deep cuts of Analog Africa's 12th compilation will instantly transport any listener to Colombia's thriving Caribbean coast to indulge in the succulent belly of tropical music's untold historic tales.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnicent Afro Latin Music 12 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD
This is a superbly packaged and collated, in depth introduction to classic 60's/ 70's/ 80's Colombian dance music and highly recommended for anyone who has any interest in Latin music and Afro Beat. Available in double CD or 2 x double vinyl. Many of the tracks are available for the first time.

For a trip to the sea, sun and carnival atmosphere of Colombia's Caribbean coast, short of getting on a plane this is the next best experience.

Since it arrived it has been played almost continuously, each time a new favourite track emerging. The quality of recordings is generally excellent and the 60 page booklet is an interesting and very informative addition to a wonderful collection of great music.

Current favourite is Schallcarri" - Grupo Abharca Track 5 CD 1 - Brilliant !

If you are a lover of latin type music, this is for you, I heard a track, Santana something or other, on Jazzfm, hooked. Bought the CD and played it about 4 times straight away. It may not strike you if you aren't into music full stop, if you like the latin then buy it and enjoy it. It's top toons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soulfull African beats. 11 Nov 2013

I bought the CD as I thought it was the usual Latin Colombian music with a bit of the African beat, but the medley of songs has very strong African rhythmic soulful influences. It is for listening rather than for dancing to.....

5.0 out of 5 stars The cover alone, should tell you what you can expect. 12 Jan 2013
By Scott McWade - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
First disc is Afrobeat, Palenque sounds, Champeta & Caribbean funk. Second disc is Puya, Porro, Gaita, Cumbiamba, Mapale', Chande' & Descarga. If that sounds confusing, the music is anything but, your hips will know what to do. Excellent compilation of some long lost Colombian treasures. Analog Africa is at the forefront of this type of archival collection, their presentation is first rate although the white on black micro font text is a tough read. A gem on all other counts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wild, wooly and wonderful 8 Feb 2013
By mark in ann arbor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
An amazing overview of Colombian club music spanning nearly 3 decades. The extremely difficult-to-read liner notes (dark green type against a brown background) tell a fascinating quasi-anthropological tale of a producer trying to track down these songs in a country and culture where the musicians and singers who made the records were far less important than the DJs who played them in clubs.

Colombian clubs in the 60s and 70s liked to play "exclusives," records you couldn't hear anywhere else. As such, when a DJ found a particularly hip track, he might rip off the label or anything that might identify who the artist was, what label it was on, the name of the song, anything. Tracking these songs down was akin to performing an archaeological dig. But the results are well worth the effort. Track after track of insane, deliriously wild dance music, with amazing percussion, singers who sometimes sound as if they've just escaped from an asylum, and wicked hot guitar players. A wonderful document of an almost totally undocumented genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joyful Rhythms 5 Dec 2013
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The one reviewer who mentioned the "confusing" number of music categories featured on this CD (Afrobeat, Puya, Cumaiamba, Terapia, Mapale, Porro, Gaita, Chande, Descarga) is right: don't worry about the dizzying variety of classifications, just enjoy the music! As the subtitle of this set proclaims, this is indeed a "Colombian Melting Pot" of limb-waving, booty-shaking tunes. Joyful rhythms abound!

With all this mention of musical categories, including Caribeean Funk and comparisons to Afro-Beat, what these styles of Colombian music remind me most of is Cuban music from the same era, basically the 1960s through the early 80s. But no matter what you want to label this music, it's just fun, intoxicating stuff. Fans of anything from Cuban Son stylings to 70s Afrobeat rhythms should really dig this compilation.

This 2-CD set was released by Analog Africa, and if you are familiar with the other compilations that they have put out, you know that you are getting high quality packaging. This CD is encased in a sturdy hardcover gatefold sleeve, containing a deluxe 60-page booklet, packed with details about the songs and the various Colombian music styles. An excellent reissue.

5.0 out of 5 stars a good collection 30 April 2014
By David coppinger - Published on Amazon.com

I was not paying too much attention when I first slipped this disc into the cd player,,,and was very happy with the range of music presented. There is plenty to keep one entertained and the feet tapping. When the CD ended, I popped it back into the booklet/package....congratulated myself on a good choice....and found another CD !
Double pleasure. So, apart from being very good music, there is enough to keep you in the groove for a few hours
