The one reviewer who mentioned the "confusing" number of music categories featured on this CD (Afrobeat, Puya, Cumaiamba, Terapia, Mapale, Porro, Gaita, Chande, Descarga) is right: don't worry about the dizzying variety of classifications, just enjoy the music! As the subtitle of this set proclaims, this is indeed a "Colombian Melting Pot" of limb-waving, booty-shaking tunes. Joyful rhythms abound!
With all this mention of musical categories, including Caribeean Funk and comparisons to Afro-Beat, what these styles of Colombian music remind me most of is Cuban music from the same era, basically the 1960s through the early 80s. But no matter what you want to label this music, it's just fun, intoxicating stuff. Fans of anything from Cuban Son stylings to 70s Afrobeat rhythms should really dig this compilation.
This 2-CD set was released by Analog Africa, and if you are familiar with the other compilations that they have put out, you know that you are getting high quality packaging. This CD is encased in a sturdy hardcover gatefold sleeve, containing a deluxe 60-page booklet, packed with details about the songs and the various Colombian music styles. An excellent reissue.
