Right, where do I start... Wow!!! This is a really awesome album!!! The album is a collection of Venzuelan classical guitar pieces. Laura is possibly the only well known composer featured but there's virtually not a duff track here - the whole album sits together really well, it's well produced and the pieces flow naturally into one another. And then, boy, can Williams play! He's technically flawless yet he plays with real spirit and feeling, managing to make his guitar really sing the melodies while keeping a really tight and strong rhythmic backbone together. The combination is electrifying!!! The only slight critiscism is that some of the pieces are played quite fast (at least faster than other recordings I've heard) - but, judging by the end result (in particular the amazing rythmic pulse of the music!) and the precision with which Williams plays, I'd say this sets a new benchmark!

Buy this album, you won't regret it!! Especially if you're into latin american guitar in any way!!! This has gone straight to the top of my favourite's pile.

Staggering 23 May 2012
Format:MP3 Download|Amazon Verified Purchase
No need to say anything about the standard of the playing here, of course it's wonderful, what did you expect? but the sheer
joy of listening to a world class musician soaring through the exotic latin american menu on offer here is a pleasure indeed.
Nothing but sheer exuberance, delicacy of interpretation and flawless technique for track after track, if you're a guitarist, be prepared to be staggered, if you just love the guitar music of South America this is a rare treat.

Amazing new recording 20 Jan 2004
By Luis C. Diaz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Let me start saying that I am Venezuelan and I have had the chance to see many guitar players perform many of the songs selected in this CD. I can honestly say that the performaces presented by John Williams rank among the best ones I have listen in a long time. The song arragements were done by another giant of the classical guitar, Alirio Diaz, a venezuelan guitarrist that has taken classical guitar music to a higher level. The result is a recording full of live and emotion, as well as, technical mastery. This a true guitar document that presents Venezuela's musical legacy to the guitar world. I just hope that Mr Williams is willing to do another CD with more of this music.

Williams at the Top of His Form! 24 Jun 2004
By J. D. Patchick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Hi classical guitar fans. This is the first time I've decided to write a few words for Amazon. This recording has moved me to add a few words to the roster.

I would like to convey something that perhaps is missing from the other commentary. This album rises above the usual "good recording", by Mr. Williams. We have here a CD that is the rare combination of all the right elements that combine to make it into the most hoped for "favorite record" status.

It is that good! I sensed it right away when I played it for the first time through. Every song is a gem, perfectly played and follows in the 'right' order. The producers have very cleverly managed to time the space between the tracks to be very minute, and so the music flows wonderfully from one song to the next.

Both my mother and father are in love with this CD as much as I am! They play it over and over. My mother (who is 70) counts it as one of her favorite recordings of all time.

Folks, this is truly a winner.

Another Winner from Williams 3 Feb 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
At first I thought about giving this CD a strong four or four-and-a-half star rating. I hesitate to give any CD a five rating, which to me implies perfection. However, I give this CD a five-star rating because it is outstanding when compared to most.

This CD has lots of variety, with the expected high quality of Williams' playing and an even better than expected quality of sound recording. I do prefer Sharon Isbin's slightly more expressive and elegant rendition of "Virgilio," and David Burgess's dazzling and mesmerizing recording of "Seis por Derecho." Nevertheless, Williams' is masterful at bringing out the intricate rhythms and wonderful melodies of both these and the rest on this CD.

The big bonus of this CD consists of the four pieces in which Williams is accompanied by Alfonso Montes on the cuatro, Venezuela's national instrument. The addition of the cuatro, which mainly serves as a kind of four-stringed rhythm guitar, pumps energy and excitement into a couple of works by Antonio Lauro and other Venezuelan composers. It's hard to keep your head from bobbing and feet from tapping to the beat of these gems.

Lauro is one of my favorite composers; Williams is definitely my favorite guitarist. Lauro alone plus Williams equals five stars.
