Greed is a mortal sin for good reason: it makes you objectify people and it dehumanizes you. And ACTIVISION/BLIZZARD are guilty as hell of it. At least the bozos at the top are!
Why is it that game publishers keep using (and ruining) their most popular game franchises to push for their own always-online scheme?
DIABLO is one of the most popular game series and its third installment was greatly anticipated. It has updated graphics and streamlined gameplay, new classes and although it has been dumbed down and striped of any religious symbol a great number of people want to experience it.
Nevertheless, the game has been receiving twice as many bad reviews as good ones. The "haters" are not out to get at anybody and the gamers are not "split" (as their cloaked spinners would claim): the great majority of us hate the always online requirement, the endless updates, the server failures, the lag - in short, the shackles the game comes with.
I did not buy the game because, after experiencing the open beta, I decided not to be worthy of all trouble. There are plenty of games out there that will not ask of me to jump through hoops and twirl my thumps until I am given permission to use the product I paid more than full price to buy.
ACTIVISION/BLIZZARD will still sell million of copies - but at the price of their own customers' loyalty. And that is something built in decades while can be brought down in a week.
Will they be releasing...REALLY BAD GUY IV next? Would anyone care?
A cathedral or a chapel without a Christian cross? A demonic apparition without a pentagram?
A Diablo game without any religious symbols is bland and hypocritical. ActiBlizzard wants the pie whole (pumping the collective unconscious for Christian semiotics) and eating it too (removing any Christian visual reference).
But there is no avoiding it. After all, the game IS called ...Diablo, right?
