Sometimes flawed, but fantastic!, 10 May 2008
It's not quite clear what you get with this release, so I'll clarify; Disk one is the film Dhoom, Disk two is the film Dhoom 2, and the third disk is a Dhoom 2 special features disk and contains music, interviews, and a feature on the make-up required for the various disguises used in the film.
I'll start by reviewing the first film..
DHOOM: Abhishek Bachchan is perfectly cast as the mean and moody 'super-cop' Jai Dixit. His serious demeanor contrasts perfectly with comedy sidekick Ali (Uday Chopra).
This is without doubt a film for motorbike fans! There are motorbike chases galore with some fantastic action cinematography. The action effects, and the fight scenes are choreographed to perfection - they themselves warrant this film worthy of a watch.
There is a mutual feeling of recognition between Jai Dixit and his nemesis in the film - crime gang leader Kabir (John Abraham), and their cat-and-mouse chase leads to a thrilling (if not predictable) conclusion.

DHOOM 2: (This is a cut down version of my existing review for Dhoom 2.)
The main focus of this film isn't believability, it's an implausible as a film gets. It's also incredibly cheesy at times and often overly simplistic, but it's also pretty damn good! And lets face it - any film with Hrithik Roshan in is worth watching for the great man himself!
The action scenes are a visual treat, there's a definite James Bond influence (train top fighting, speedboats, etc).
The film makers have been careful to steer clear of making this a basic 'cops and robbers' story. The movie strengthens the idea established in the first film that there can be a chemistry between the notorious guys at opposite ends of the law, and there's a crackle of energy when the two meet on screen.
It's this dynamic that raises the film up from being just an average action-comedy. You forgive the ridiculous moments (the scene where Dixit works out when and where the next heist will be is cringeworthy) because this film doesn't take itself seriously. It knows it's a silly action film and pretends to be nothing else.
The musical numbers in this film are fantastic, far catchier than the first film, and with Hrithik dancing there's some fabulous moves too. Infact, I've watched the song and dance routines several times since, I can't get enough of them!
In a nutshell: The first film has a darker feel than the second. It's a more serious film, but still fun. For Dhoom 2 the plausability drops to zero but there's an amazing energy. You can tell the budget for the sequel is much much larger as the stunts are more ambitious and the cast more star-studded. Dhoom 2 had to be big to top Dhoom, and all the stops were pulled out to succesfully achieve it.
The metal box is a nice package and the only thing that lets these films down is the obvious transfer from the original cinema film (something I've seen with other Bollywood films), so halfway through you get an "Interval" message and the picture maybe isn't as great as it could have been if taken from the master and digitally enhanced. But having said that, the picture isn't poor and doesn't take away from your enjoyment. Also, this isn't a PAL disk set, it's NTSC so you may have problems if your viewing on an old TV which doesn't support NTSC picture formats.

the first dvd wasn't really that good but dhoom 2 was excellent. The storyline is brilliant and the music is great.
It's one of the best.
