Umpteenth album from cult Japanese noise artist Masami Akita aka Merzbow. Having previously worked with guitars and tape loops, on this release he utilizes a laptop to sample and distort a piano. The result is a collage of screeching feedback, white noise and grinding distortion.

As with most Merzbow albums Dharma is chiefly built from textured noise. This album is mostly in his psychedelic noise blanket mode, with subtle edits and buried loops rather than pummelling contrasts and jumps. Small sections of disjointed atonal piano act as a contrast, similar in effect to the prog rock snippets on Aqua Necromancer, though the feel of the album is rather more mysterious. Many Merzbow records are made as direct homages to particular musicians or genres, but Dharma seems to be more concerned with nothingness, the void, (perhaps death) or at least the process of reaching out to it...Besides the hypnotic cycling sounds themselves there are the titles, with references to sound sources and emptiness: "Piano Space for Marimo Kitty","I'm coming to the garden.....no sound, no memory". The final thirty odd minute "Frozen guitars and sunloop/7E 802" is a vast projection of barely moving rhythmless noise, like the soul of a giant cymbal being cryogenically suspended.
