Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

An interesting and original idea that's very skillfully executed, Dexter is never less than watchable, often quite compelling and sometimes thoroughly riveting. As the 12 episodes from the show's first season reveal, it's also the epitome of "high concept," a kind of Silence of the Lambs for the C.S.I. generation. Creator-executive producer James Manos Jr.'s title character, one Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall of Six Feet Under renown), works for the Miami Police Department as a blood spatter analyst, visiting crime scenes and helping figure out what happened. He has an avocation, too: during his off hours, he tracks down some very, very bad people who for various reasons have eluded the proper authorities. Seems his adoptive father, a cop himself, taught the kid how to channel his dark side in a 'positive' direction and so, having captured these evil doers (including a child molester-murderer and a recidivist drunk driver with a trail of bodies in his wake), Dex dispatches them with clinical precision, thus making him a serial killer who snuffs serial killers.

But there's more--much more, as it turns out. By his own description, Dexter is 'a monster,' an empty shell who fakes all human interactions and admits to no real feelings for anything or anyone, including his foster sister (Jennifer Carter) and his nominal girlfriend (Julie Benz), a former crack addict and battered spouse who's as uninterested in sex as he is. There's an explanation for Dexter's weirdness, of course, one so deep and traumatic that even he isn't aware of it. It's gradually revealed over the course of the season as he and the cops (who include Erik King, Lauren Velez, and David Zayas, all first-rate) track down the so-called 'Ice Truck Killer,' a fellow monster whose grisly m.o. both fascinates and taunts our hero, leading to a genuinely shocking and squirm-inducing finale. Dexter can be a bit arch, with an ironic, too-hip-for-the-room tone that get a little old. Still, it's a safe bet that anyone who views this first season will be salivating for the second. --Sam Graham

Product Description

All 12 episodes from the first series of the award-winning US drama about a Miami police forensics expert who moonlights as an avenging serial killer. After a traumatic childhood incident, orphan Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is adopted by a police officer, who soon realises the boy has a homicidal bent. Matching his skills to a worthwhile profession, Dexter is encouraged to join the Miami Police Department as a blood spatter analyst, plotting the gruesome aftermath of murders. Soon, however, the borders of work and play start to blur as Dexter begins dispensing summary justice to those who, in his eyes, have unjustly escaped prosecution. The episodes comprise: 'Dexter', 'Crocodile', 'Popping Cherry', 'Let's Give the Boy a Hand', 'Love American Style', 'Return to Sender', 'Circle of Friends', 'Shrink Wrap', 'Father Knows Best', 'Seeing Red', 'Truth Be Told' and 'Born Free'.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I'm a very neat monster." 4 Sep 2008
Format:DVD
Here we go again. Another CSI clone. Haven't we seen this all before? Well actually, not quite. There is nothing quite like Dexter.

Dexter Morgan (played by the outstanding Michael C. Hall) is a blood splatter analyst. Dexter is also a serial killer, or occasional killer, who kills the criminals who escape justic by administering some of his own.

Dexter was a troubled boy, adopted as a toddler and gaining a sister, (played by the fiery Jennifer Carpenter) with whom he now works along side, and brought up by an honest cop, who realised that Dexter was no ordinary thinking boy. Using knowledge and techniques shown to him by his father, Dexter has forged a 'career' as a very tidy and neat monster, as well as being a brilliant forensic analyst.

When attending a crime scene in sunny Miami, Dexter is shocked to be told that there is no blood for him to examine here. With surgical precision, a body has been dismembered and almost presented perfectly, waiting to be discovered. Neatly wrapped body parts leave Dexter with a challenge - to improve his own killing technique and to find the one who becomes known as 'The Ice Truck Killer'.

There are many more twists and turns as the story unfolds and we discover much more about Dexter, and that he is an emotionless character much of the time, and very quiet, almost to the point of becoming an outcast and occasionally exploding in a crescendo of violence. Despite the madness and murder, Dexter has gained respect from most of his collegues whilst hiding the fact that he has a murderous evening and weekend job. Of course there is dark humour to lift the mood slightly, only before letting the viewer plunge back into the hellish psyche of the Miami serial killer division.

Dexter is a meticulously crafted modern television masterpiece, eclipsing our very own 'Waking The Dead' and leaving a bitter sweet taste in the mouth that leaves you wanting so much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent TV Series. 16 April 2009
Format:DVD
I had heard of Dexter when it was shown on FX on Sky and was wondering if they would have it on normal tv which they did on ITV 1. But due to really late times at night, I fell asleep during many of the epsodies which really annoyed me. So on my birthday, I went to get it and had finally finished it last night savouring every single one. Dexter is a serial killer with a heart, caring for his foul-mouthed but sweet foster sister and being the boyfriend of a beaten woman with two kids that he really adores. But behind the scenes, he kills only the bad people and tries to be semi normal around Doakes who is very suspious of him. With a shocking serial killer called The Ice Truck Killer, Dexter dosent' realise that this person is going to be hugely involved in his life and everything that he holds dear could be in total danger. It's excellent, twisted, shocking at times, gory, sexy and just good fun. Every epsoide has some dark laughs and brilliant pefomances from the stars inculding Michael C Hall who was outstanding in Six Feet Under. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a series with twists and turns only to be warned that it's qutie gory and you may eat a lot because he surely does! A perfect buy.

I'm not going to follow the herd here and say how brilliant this is - because it's just not! I'm giving it 3 stars, or 6 out of 10, which is above average. In my terminology, 3-stars means 'It's OK. It's not bad." It's just that, in my judgement, it's not brilliant, that's all.

I gave it a chance but in the end I thought there was a good idea at its heart but it ended up being something of a one-trick pony; there was no multi-layered story, no magnetic characters outside of the 'interesting' Dexter. If you analyse its core strengths, very few of them stand up to comparison with the truly best TV drama/comedies.

There are numerous weaknesses to it that let it down. I must emphasise that at the time of writing I have only seen Series One from 2006 and my criticisms may have been addressed later (in subsequent series), but for now I have to say that the script was consistently poor and failed to convey the darkness of the premise. Having just watched the entire first series of THE WIRE (very different, I know!), Dexter seems utterly average in comparison, and it proves to me yet again that I would rather watch a so-so story with a rivetting script than a great story with a so-so script. I wouldn't call it bad, but it deserved better writing, and writing is at the centre of every story.

Then there's the acting. Some if not all of the peripheral characters were not good enough for this potentially fantastic TV series. Again the script didn't help but even putting that to one side the casting (or possibly the directing) was just par for the course and nothing better. I would single out Dexter's police colleagues Angel Batista, Lt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally hooked 27 Feb 2009
Format:DVD
Read the book before watching the series and for once, the T.V. version is much better.Dexter is a complicated character played with great panache by Michael C Hall who really brings the character to life on the screen. - The fact that he's "easy on the eye" is an added bonus! While the viewer knows that Dexter is basically a murdering vigilante and what he does is against the law one can't but help liking him and even empathising with his way of thinking and actions. The use of voiceover from Dexter gives the viewer further insights into his character and way of thinking. The cast of secondary characters are also interesting and several story lines weave their way through this excellent series. From the extremely imaginative opening credits - totally in keeping with the flavour of the show - I was completely hooked on this series from the very first episode and can't wait to see how Dexter develops in series 2, currently being shown on T.V. here in the U.K.
