Product Description

Album Description

The UK's leading jazz instrumentalist - Courtney Pine's ninth studio album, 'Devotion'. Four years in the making, this album follows his critically acclaimed and award winning 'Back In The Day' set and this time features stunning vocal contributions from Carleen Anderson, David McAlmont and Jacqui Dankworth.

'Devotion' encompasses many styles, infusing Courtney's trademark jazz foundations with contemporary sounds and a global feel with Eastern/Asian influences often to the fore. Courtney continues to reshape and push the boundaries of jazz and urban music with this self-produced album, which also features live musicians including sitar player Sheema Mukherjee of Trans Global Underground fame. The track "When the World Turns Blue" (originally by Joe Sample/Will Jennings sung by Merry Clayton and here featuring Carleen Anderson) comes with a remix from luminary drum and bass outfit 4hero. David McAlmont also weighs in with an evocative interpretation of the John Martyn song "Bless The Weather".

Personnel:
Courtney Pine (soprano & tenor saxophones, bass clarinet and production), Cameron Pierre (12 string electric, acoustic & electric guitars), Peter Martin (acoustic & electric basses), Chris Jerome (electric piano), Robert Fordjour (drums), Thomas Dyani (percussion)

Special guests:
David McAlmont, Carleen Anderson, Jacqui Dankworth (Lead vocals), Robert Mitchell (piano), Dennis Rollins (trombone), Byron Wallen (trumpet), Yousuf Ali Khan (tabla), Sheema Mukherjee (sitar)

It's not surprising that some reviewers don't go for this as it is guaranteed to put the backs of jazzers up, but there is more to life than Jazz, and more to courtney pine too. I love this album and have played it constantly over the past couple of weeks on long, long, motorway drives which maybe explains why the album works for me. It is a bit middle-of-the-road, it is a bit soothing music, but within those genre's it's got a brain. It also has the sublime voices of Carlene Anderson and the wonderous David McAlmont, who is definitely at his best in collaboration with other musicians (like Pine and Butler). The bonus 16th track is a gem - a glorious cover of Terence Trent d'Arby's formerly naff 'Sign Your Name' which just glitters and glows.
Obviously Pine's Sax tooting is masterful, but I think it's some of the other things that make the album shine out - crisp orchestration, inventive arrangements some nifty Hammond organ to name but a few. So celebrate it as what it is and all you Jazzers hang on in there for a different album - I'm sure it will come - but remember it isn't a crime to do something different from time to time.

Amazing album!! 29 May 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I went to see Courtney Pine last night, hitherto not having listened to much of his music. The concert blew me away! It was without doubt the best gig I have ever been to, and on the strength of that I bought this album. I wasn't disappointed! Every track shines with brilliance! The first two tracks (the first of which is an introduction to the second) is probably the best on the album with an amazing solo from Mr. Pine. The rest of the tracks are all just as catchy, with great playing not just from Courtney but from the rest of the band as well (particularly the guitarist Cameron Pierre - I'd recommend his album "Other side of Notting Hill"). All in all, a great album which you'll keep on "Repeat" on your CD player!

This album is the first to reflect what Pine is like in concert - full of energy and emotion. Great rhythms and sax playing (a wide variety of traditional and new instruments). May not appear to the jazz traditionalists but combines different influences in an exciting and energetic way. Find yourself tapping your feet. Loses one star for the three different versions of When the world turns blue - just two many!
