Product Description

Product Description

This collection of traditional stories and tales, many of which are published for the first time, will delight lovers of Devonshire folklore. Some of the stories have been gleaned from residents of the county, whilst others have been developed by the author and have evolved through countless tellings. All the tales within represent this large and diverse county throughout its long and distinguished history, from the founding of Britain itself by Brute the Trojan at Totnes, to recent reports of haunted roads and phantom hairy hands. Also included are giants, devils, witches, ghosts, fairies, spectral black dogs and a wide range of other supernatural phenomena, all exemplifying the vigorous and earthy nature of the Devon imagination down through the ages. It is a book of wonders, to terrify and intrigue, and leads the reader around this beautiful and fascinating county. Michael Dacre has been a professional storyteller specialising in traditional tales and legends from the West Country for over twenty years.

Wonderful! 25 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is just great - beautifully presented with gorgeous illustrations, and stunningly well written. I've tried reading traditional stories before and found them a bit bland, but Michael Dacre is a true master of the art of storytelling, and brings folk tales to life in a way that restores magic to our everyday world.

Beware, this is not a book for children - every now and again I feel the touch of the Huge Hairy Hands, and hear the howling of the Big Black Dog that leapt from the pages of this book; I never knew that there were pixies in Devon, but they are alive and well and waiting to play tricks on the unwary!

This book is highly recommended and well worth every penny I paid for it!

Fine folk tales 26 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
This book is part of a series which will eventually cover every county in Britain. If they are all as good as this it will be a great resource. Michael Dacre has collected stories from every corner of Devon, taking us right back in time to Brutus' arrival in Totnes fresh from the Trojan War, to the spooky horrors that await modern drivers on some of Devon's remote back roads. A quirky humour shines through, and the illustrations (uncredited, but by Wendy Dacre), which are luminous, lovely and mysterious, add to the magic of the tales. A good read which would make an interesting guide book on a tour round this lovely county.
