It's true. After months of trying to get a wireless network operational in my house using different routers and boosters, I've given up and tried the MicroLink dLAN Highspeed Starter Kit. The box blurb says "One Minute Installation" and "Easy Home Networking". For once it's not lying. This kit is really easy to setup and use and it's allowing my son at the other end of the house to use the internet. I just wish I'd bought this before trying wireless!

The devolo homeplug kit stands way above those offerings by Zyxel, Netgear, etc.

Firstly, not every user runs Windows. The driver CD (and website) both featured setup tools for Linux and MacOS X. The quoted install time of 1 minute is a bit overenthusiastic though - you would be hard pushed to have the software installed in that time!

Secondly, other manufacturers have produced homeplug devices that have cables to run the devices away from a plug socket, producing unnecessary wire clutter. These just plug straight into the socket. No trailing cables other than the ethernet cable. Let's face it, if you're using a computer, the chances are you're going to be near a plug socket anyway.

Thirdly, if you're worried about privacy or snoopers: Don't. The range is 200 metres across a single phase, and these neat little units feature encryption based on a key you set in the setup tool.

The gold standard of homeplug devices. Get rid of those trailing cables!

I bought this system because my WLAN was unstable, even with a repeater and parabolic reflector on the router antenna. The Devolo adapters almost work out of the box and are terrific!! Set-up is very easy and if you have any problems, the Devolo Tech Service team are really superb - they know their products and they talk you through any problem. Initially, I could not get the system to work and Develo patiently went through a diagnostic session with me until we confirmed one unit was faulty. Within three days I had received a replacement kit from Amazon!! Set-up is via a Wizard and essentially you just need to enter the two serial codes for each adapter so they are recognised and the signals are encrypted automatically. One thing to bear in mind - locate the nearest point of entry on the ring mains in the room you have the remote PC and use it without sharing with other electrical equipment. That way you ensure a strong signal. This is very important and is not emphasised enough on the instructions. It could make the difference between the units working or not working. My router is in an office in my garden about 15 metres from my house and the remote PC is on the other side of the house. The WLAN signal was highly unstable and kept dropping, but this is like being connected direct to the router. Web surfing is as fast as the computer in my office next to the router. If you need to run other computers around the house, you just buy an additional adapter, plug in and run the Wizard to get it recognised, and you're connected. Well done Devolo and equally well done Amazon!!

easy solution if problems with wireless connections, only disadvantage is you need to be close to a spare socket and conected and switched on before starting up PC.
