Album Description
This compilation features three of the oldest Norwegian musical instruments that have survived throughout the ages - the willow pipe, without finger holes, the jew's harp and the Hardanger fiddle. The jew's harp is from as early as the Bronze Age, while the age of the willow pipe is more difficult to establish. Both instruments have had a great influence on contemporary folk musicians.
Finally there is the Hardanger fiddle, the unique national instrument of Norway. There are many legends and stories about exhausted fiddlers who, after days of playing, have achieved a trance-like state of ecstasy. In this state they have access to a magic doorway into a waking dream, or twilight zone, in which myth, legend, dream and reality blend into one state of consciousness. Many well-known fiddle tunes have been inspired by such a state, and the various retunings of the strings seem to wield a strange power that affects the listener even today.
