2.0 out of 5 stars Great cast, terrible film. 22 April 2012
By Mark G.
Format:DVD
A group of soldiers led by Mack (Cuba Gooding) are given a mission to help a C.I.A. agent locate and extract a missing scientist from an archaeological site in the Middle East. Nothing or no one else is to be removed from the site.
But of course, there are evil things afoot.

Even worse than that though, the film itself is very poor.

The characters are cliché and one dimensional and end up looking like the roster of characters from a poorly conceived videogame. There's the token big guy, called Hammer, the medic that insists "just call me Doc" and even the `computer guy' is the glasses wearing newbie, called Click. Although to be fair I did find some unintentional humour from that when, later on when he goes missing and Mack calls out to him. This gives us a scene in which we get to see Cuba Gooding waving a gun around shouting "Click! Click! Click!" It's as if he's playing toy soldiers and is making a noise that signifies he's run out of ammo.

In addition the film is also poorly written and directed. Mack keeps having flashbacks but they feel intrusive as they are ineptly woven in to the film and happen with alarming frequency. I think there were at least 5 times in the first hour where we got to see Mack zone out and go into flashback mode.
A favourite moment of badly handled filmmaking is when one of the characters self sacrifices and blows themselves up but we are not shown them activating an explosive or pulling the pin from a grenade. They just stick their arms in the air (ok they are holding something but it's not clear what it is it could of been an old banana for all I know), then there's a bleep and they explode.

I realise this may sound as if I'm being overly nitpicky but the film just isn't entertaining.

This film which i own the Scanbox dvd release is pretty weird. So it's about a military group who goes to rescue a scientist who's been doing a biological tests in desert. However as the group progressess and gets scattered psychological stuff starts to play and each of the crew members slaughter each other. The violence is not OTT but it's not for kids either. There is good amount of gore and blood. The characters are not bad but the setting and ending of the film are very very weird.

This film star's a few big name actors such as Ron Pearlman, Cuba Gooding Jr & Ray Winstone. Unfortunately that's where the film's high points come to an abrupt end. To be blunt, this film is dire.

For a start this film is apparently meant to be set in a conutry in the Middle East, conveniently we don't find out which country which leaves this film to OBVIOUSLY be shot in some random desert in America. This is blatantly obvious due to the fact we barely get a glimpse of the outside world and this film is definetly shot on a laughably low budget, possibly due to spending so much money hiring well known actor's to give this film about a miniscule of credibility.

I won't bore you with the details but our team of no-body's who as a viewer we rarely give a damn about venture into some old research chamber buried under the desert and inevitably bump into all sorts of not so scary at all weirdos.

It features all your typical cliche army squadron type soldiers, the computer geek soldier whos good at fixing things and know a bit about literature, OH, and also wears glasses just to give him that extra bit of "authenticity". There's the hot female soldier whos a bit feisty and the angry headstrong commanding officer.

Then there's the acting = poor. The special effects and the make up etc = terrible, the blood for instance looks fake as hell and the make up on the guys faces looks like that, not realistic.

That's all I can summon up to say about this junk. Ive seen worse films for sure but this comes close. I can't believe I wasted my money on this & urge everyone else to stay far away from this film.

Really thought this would be good with the actors that are in it couldn't be more wrong it really doesn't improve although you keep hoping it will. There is nothing in it that is worth watching it for.

1.0 out of 5 stars Forgettable 14 Sep 2013
Format:DVD
I can't believe what an unbelievably bad movie this is.

The movie aims to work as one of those "guys on a mission who get into trouble" movies but it just doesn't work as such.

One of things I dislike most is the awful make-up design. It's just so ugly... I mean ugly can work but not this kind of ugly. As it's just...ugly.

I really can't recommend this one. It may seem like an amusing film but it's not. It's just bland. And ugly. That may sound harsh but I'm sorry it is what it is.
