Product Description

Product Description
After more than fifty years controversy still rages about the Allied decision to bomb the beautiful and historic city of Dresden on 13 February 1945. By then the war was virtually won and the city was full mainly of civilians and refugees, most of them women and children. The resulting firestorm in which at least 35,000 people lost their lives sent shock-waves round the world. This classic book is the only one to present the personal accounts of a host of eye-witnesses - not only the survivors in the city, but also the young aircrews, both British and American, whose duty it was to drop the bombs and observe the appalling effects of their repeated attacks. The book also provides a careful assessment of the political and military decisions that led to the raids, drawn from official and unofficial printed sources, and includes 24 pages of contemporary photographs that bear telling witness to the devastating results of an inferno which reduced the city to rubble. Skilfully told, meticulously researched, this powerful book is at once gripping, shocking and deeply moving.

About the Author
Alexander McKee had a distinguished career as a writer of outstanding books on a war and military history in which he specialised in recording the personal accounts of eye-witnessed on both sides. 'The Race for Rhine Bridges', 'Strike from the Sky' and 'Caen': The Anvil of Victory' are notable examples, all published by Souvenir Press. He became internationally famous for his discovery of King Henry VIII's flagship 'Mary Rose', for which he was awarded the OBE. His book on the subject, 'How we Found the Mary Rose', became a bestseller
