Product Description

This was a fantastic album. The musicians from both sides of the Atlantic worked together very, very well. Not one bad number. We like the touch of gypsy in it. Clever guitar work and the rich sound of brass. Wow!

Good album, but a bit soft for what the Fanfare used to be

Adventurous and Exciting: At the Crossroads 18 Feb. 2014
By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The Romanian Romani [Gypsy] brass and reed band Fanfare Ciocarlia, renown for its exciting rapid staccato playing of traditional Balkan melodies, has in recent years been stretching into new directions and collaborating with other artists. This album is such an exploration; it is an outstanding performance and production. The compositions and arrangements are by Toronto guitarist Adrian Raso, who also plays here banjo and electric bass and who has studied intently Django's Gypsy Jazz. What the merger has created is an old-time flavored jazzy, Aegean and Mediterranean funky blast of good cheer. The sound is unique and grand. It has the pulsing Parisian Hot Club beat, soaring Balkan clarinet and saxophone improvisations, powerful underlying trumpets, baritones and tubas. Guest musicians Rodrigo (guitar), Kevin Figueiredo (drums), Kai Schönburg (percussion), Florin Ionita (accordion), Marc Elsner (electric bass), and Michael Metzler (jew's harp) add additional musical color to the various tracks. 4/4 swing and 3/4 waltzes bring help bring variety. Sometimes we hear cowboy Western, sometimes Italian dancing, with another track we are in the Balkans, another track takes us to American's Mississippi South, still another tune has us on the East Bank of the Seine... but in some alternative universe. The final track is full of musical quotes. The price of this album is a tad high, particularly for only 41 minutes, but it is worth it. Besides great musicianship, it is simply fun. Take this train across the global tracks and enjoy the clever delights.
