From Amazon.co.uk

Any movie starring Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford has got to be worth seeing, right? That's as close to a guarantee as this well-meaning thriller ever gets, however, and the talents of Pitt and Ford are absolutely vital in making any sense out of this dramatically muddled scenario. Ostensibly the movie's about an IRA terrorist (Pitt) who escapes from British troops in Belfast and travels to New York City, where he stays in the home of a seasoned cop (Ford) who has no idea of the terrorist's true identity. (Why a veteran cop would host a complete stranger in his home is one of those shaky details you're better off not thinking about.) But while Pitt's passionate character waits to make an arms deal for his IRA compatriots back in Ireland, The Devil's Own conveniently avoids any detailed understanding of the Northern Ireland conflict, focusing instead on the cop's moral dilemma when he discovers that his young guest is a terrorist. The film is superbly acted, and overall it's quite worthwhile, but don't look to it for an abundance of plot logic or an in-depth understanding of Protestant-Catholic tensions in Northern Ireland. (For that, take a look at In the Name of the Father or the underrated historical biopic Michael Collins.) --Jeff Shannon.

Synopsis

Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt co-star in Alan J. Pakula's hit about about a New York cop and an Irishterrorist who face the ultimate danger when their lives intersect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Must see! 12 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
THE DEVIL'S OWN, Alan J. Pakula's last film, is a character-driven thriller that confronts suspense and gritty realism head-on. Harrison Ford plays Tom O'Meara, an Irish-American cop in New York who opens his home and family to Francis "Frankie" McGuire (Brad Pitt), whom they believe is a refuge-seeking immigrant from Belfast. They later discover that their visitor is an IRA rebel on a terrorist mission. Buoyed by tense, strong performances from both stars, the film is ultimately a tragedy that explores the unexpected friendship of two men of similar ethnic roots, yet of different places, times, and values, and the cruel and senseless cycle of violence they face.

Seen the first hour of this on TV until our digital company top box failed to record the last hour. Such a good film we couldn't not see what happened so purchased the DVD. Have watched it so many times. Excellent thriller with a very unexpected ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars A mixed offering 20 Mar 2013
Format:DVD
See the one star comment, which I must say I have sympathy for. As an entertaining film , it's OK. However, there is a lot of misplaced jingoism in this and it only touches the real issues of the troubles from a USA slanted perspective. With a better plot (and, perhaps, direction) the film could have attempted a braver commentary on what really was happening. That's Hollywood!

Although an early film of Harrison Ford it is well worth a watch.I have found there are not many films of H.F that I do not like, and some of the old ones are a lot cheaper.
