Product Description

Product Description

With the fine disregard for orders from the highest level that soldiers were strictly forbidden to keep diaries, Denis Edwards managed to record his experiences throughout nearly all his time in Europe in 1944-45. Since he was one of the first both to land on D-day and was among the first to join up with the Russians bear the Baltic in the Spring of 1945, his record covers the entire period of the fighting after the landings in Normandy. And a very remarkable record it is too. After a brief account of his upbringing and early training under the command of the indomitable Major John Howard, he goes on to describe the airborne landings at Pegasus Bridge and the events of each day thereafter. His account of the nearly disastrous Rhine Crossing is particularly important. The Devil's Own Luck brilliantly conveys what it was like to be facing death day after day, night after night, month after month, with never a bed to sleep in nor a hot meal to go home to. This is warfare in the raw - brutal yet humorous, immensely tragic but, sadly, all true. Denis Edwards' diary was brought to a wider audience when the hardback was published in 1999. Having sold out in a few months it is now being printed in paperback for the first time.

About the Author

Denis Edwards joined the 10th Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry Young Soldiers battalion. He was transferred to the gliderborne 2nd Battalion, part of the 6th Airborne Division. After service in Normandy, the Ardennes and Germany he was sent to India ahead of the Division, which never arrived being diverted to Palestine. He rejoined the Division after hitch-hiking back to the Parachute Regiment.

Day To Day Warfare 28 Jun 2007
Format:Paperback
Based on his diaries the author was finally able to publish his wartime memories towards the end of his life. The raw honesty and factual recounting of his experiences make compelling reading, adding a first hand account of the war as seen by a soldier on the ground. The sheer acceptance of the continual shelling and loss of life of his fellow soldiers leaves one with a sense of realisation of what these brave men went through. An excellent personal account.

Outstanding account of the fight from the early hours of D-Day to Germany from an on-the-ground perspective.

An insight into what such close quarters fighting must have been like and a hint of the real heroism that existed.

A must-read if you are going to visit the Normandy battlefields.
