Product Description

Ed Carew and his small ragtag crew are smugglers and ne’erdo- wells, thumbing their noses at the Expansion, the vast human hegemony extending across thousands of worlds... until the day they are caught, and offered a choice between working for the Expansion and an ignominious death. They must trespass across the domain of humanity’s neighbours, the Vetch – the inscrutable alien race with whom humanity has warred, at terrible cost of
life, and only recently arrived at an uneasy peace – and into uncharted space beyond, among the strange worlds of the Devil’s Nebula, looking for long-lost settlers.

A new evil threatens not only the Expansion itself, but the Vetch as well. In the long run, the survival of both races may depend on their ability to lay aside their differences and co-operate.

3.0 out of 5 stars Can't make my mind up about this one... 23 July 2012

I guess it's just going to be one of those stories which have parts which I like and bits that I'm not too keen on. Quite an interesting premise, but the story seemed to get quite ponderous about half-way through. Then it sped up towards the end and seemed a bit rushed.
Overall a good read, but not his most polished work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unfulfilled promise 5 Jun 2012

I have been looking forward to this book for months. I like the author and I like space opera. The description sounded interesting, if not too original.

After finishing the book I have mixed reactions. The writing is clean and crisp. The plot moves briskly. I was able to easily finish the book in two sittings and at no point wanted to skip text or give up. All that said, I found descriptive passages too brief, characterization pretty minimal and the book too short. I would guess the shortness of the book is my biggest beef. I felt everything was rushed: the characters' enlistment by the authorities; the space trip; the encounter with the alien Weird; the finale.

The book tees up a sequel at the end and I know one is already under contract. I will get it because I am a sucker for space opera but I hope it is a meatier work.
4.0 out of 5 stars Space opera fans: Here is an author to watch 10 May 2013

Not among the best, lacking some of the flair and the mind boggling infinities - but this is good space opera, worth your time and money. Eric Brown's pen has the flash, the action is quick, the venues are far flung and vivid, the conflicts and interpersonal relations portray suspense and nerve. Thumbs up, lets hope that it gets even better in a year or two from this author.
5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Scifi. I don't finish every book I start. I finished this. 12 Mar 2013
By Book Lover - Published on Amazon.com
Eric Brown doesn't rework the Space Opera, but instead embraces it's tropes with vigor and joy. His lead characters are familiar, yet distinctly their own, and the story moves along at a solid clip that keeps you interested. This isn't groundbreaking scifi, but it is a good to great read for lovers of Scifi.
