This terrific British horror film takes the form of a rockumentary telling the story of Erika Spawn(Victoria Hopkins), a controversial music star with a reputation to shock. We see footage of an unfinished European tour, the introduction of 'groupie' Stef Regan(Lucy Dunn) into the mix, and how both women are somehow linked to one time Boy Band member and sometime moral crusader Robin Harris(Scott Thompson). Erika's band members and manager all are interviewed about the terrible events that were about to unfold in the lives of these three seemingly unreleated individuals.
It's a crying shame that this film remains a cult favourite, only seen by a relatively small minority of people, whilst an inferior film such as 'The Blair Witch Project' should rake in the multi-millions. The 'found footage' style horror film, if done right can lead to superb tension, but it has to have an authentic documentary feel to it, to convince. In this regard, The Devil's Music succeeds admirably. This is in no small measure due to a wonderfully understated performance from Higgins' regular Cy Henty who plays Spawn's manager Eddie Meachum. Henty is fast becoming one of my favourite modern horror actors.
The film holds it cards tight to its chest, but the viewer gets tantilising little glimpses of the horrifying events that are about to unfold. The ending is a little reminiscant of fellow documentary style horror 'The Last Broadcast', but that does not lessen the impact of the creepy climax one jot. Spine tingling stuff.
There is also a quite brilliant 'director's commentary' from Higgins, where he plays the role of the nervous, regretful Documentary maker to a tee. If you have to listen to one director's commentary in your lifetime, make it this one, and preferably listen to it immediately after watching the film.
I can only hope that one day Higgins will fulfill his promise and make 'Strippers vs Werewolves'
Highly recommended. 5 out of 5 (I think I should also quickly mention that this film is a Region 0 release so can be viewed on all dvd players. It is not Region 1 as stated in the product info)
